Engineering Applications
Project 3.2.2 Consequences of the Solution

1. Key Concepts
a. Loads
i. The load of the products weight will be supported through the use of a
metallic testing platform that will be anchored to the ground. Overall the
major load produced by the pulse jet will be static which is the thrust
created by running the engine. A dynamic load of the product will be the
temperature of the surface of the product which will rise to an extreme
within a very short period of time.
b. Materials
i. Overall, stainless steel has been shown to be a great material which has the
capability of withstanding an exuberant amount of testing and abuse. In
addition stainless steel is very strong and can be depended on for
protection against premature failure.
c. Mechanical Engineering
i. In order to start the product the use of a leaf blower or compressed gas is
necessary in order to initiate the flow of air which will be ignited within
the combustion chamber. In the product there will be no moving parts
whatsoever, due to this there will not be an optimal speed at which the
parts will be moving.
d. Energy
i. Energy is supplied to the product in the manner of compressed gas and the
pressurized flow of propane into the main intake of the pulse jet. This fuel
air mixture is then ignited which causes a small explosion within the
combustion chamber. This explosion causes the exhaust vapor which
results in the desired thrust.
e. Chemical/Bio Engineering
i. The only chemical transformations that occur in the product are the
mixing of propane and air. In addition, the explosion process causes the
mixture to heat up and create thrust.
f. Electrical Engineering
i. There will not be any electric components within the pulse jet itself.
2. Noise Complaints, Fire warnings, and potential user harm. Due to these laws being very
serious, for prototyping and testing of the pulse jet, I have decided to conduct it outside
city limits on the property of a family friend in Wellborn. As for users, I have decided to
issue a statement that the company will not take responsibility for any harm that comes
from running the pulse jet in an improper way or in an improper place. We have met the
ethical responsibility for this project. I would include a very detailed form with the
shipment of each pulse jet that would talk about the dangers that the user might encounter
while using the product.
3.

4. Overall the product itself does not pollute the environment to a great degree. The only
concern would be of noise pollution due to the operation of the pulse jet within a densely
populated area. Other than the noise, the pulse jet itself can be recycled fully due to it
being constructed out of pure stainless steel. In order to reduce noise pollution, the
running of the pulse jet should be conducted in an isolated area that is conducive for
testing and experimenting such as an open field or a gun range.
5. Overall the pulse jet itself does not pollute nature to a dramatic extent at all. Even though
it might produce a moderate amount of noise pollution, the time in which it would be
causing this pollution is very limited due to it only being able to run for short periods of
time without harm to the pulse jet itself. In addition to this, the product creates an
extremely effective testing bed for different applications of pulse jet technology that have
not yet been explored.

Conclusion
1. One way the product could fail would be running it for a duration of time that exceeds the
recommended run time. This would cause the pulse jet to melt due to excessive heat
production. I have incorporated the use of slightly thicker stainless steel in order to
compensate for this.
2. In many ways it is ethically justifiable seeing as the product might potentially help the
world as a whole and as a result affect a much greater population for the better. For
instance the invention of nuclear power caused many people to get radiation poisoning as
a result of testing. In the end however nuclear power is a very effective method for
creating energy for a massive society.
