Facilita'ng Development of Student-Centered Math Prac'ces

Project Summary:
Teachers self-reported having low
condence and feeling unsupported with
regard to math instruc4on. Therefore, HTe
and HTeX started an Elementary Math PD
group with three major goals:
1. Increase students conceptual
understanding of math through
discourse
2. Build on teacher knowledge of problem
types and student solu=on strategies
3. Create a common vision school wide
around student-centered math
instruc=on prac=ces

I feel like a lot of my students are

really excited about doing math At one of our rst PD mee4ngs, I asked teachers to describe what their
everyday and are excited to be vision of an equitable math classroom looked like. To help unify our
challenged. Because the students group around our common vision, I created this Wordle using the
really drive the discussion and drive teachers descrip4ons:
how they want to solve their math
problems, they're ul4mately
construc4ng their knowledge through
one another, which gives many kids
an opportunity to share and explore
their own thinking. I've had kids that
have gone from having almost zero
access to a given problem, to sharing
their strategy in front of the class. I've
had a kid who never raised her hand
during math, beg me to show her
mom aUer school all the math work
that she's been doing, and showing it
to her mom very proudly. The beauty
of the math work that we're doing is
that we're not pushing kids to solve
math in any specic way; we're
allowing them to make meaning of it
through whatever channels necessary
and giving them the tools they need
to feel successful. Students can take
authen4c ownership of their own
learning, which has been so beau4ful
and amazing to see.

We have seen a lot of growth so far, both in terms of teacher condence as well as feelings of support:
