ABSTRACT
Background: Sudden unexpected death is definéd as death
occurring instantaneously or within an estimated 24 hours
of the onset of acute symptoms and signs. In Indonesia,
the National Institute of Health Research and Development
of the Ministry of Health in Indonesia reported that the
percentage of sudden death increased from 5,9% (1975) to
9,1 (1981), 16,0% (1986) and 19,0 (1995) (Hakim, 2010).
Many overseas studies have said that the main cause of
sudden death is cardiovascular diseases. In Yogyakarta
there hasn’t been a study on the sudden death cases yet
so the awareness is still low. Once those cases from RSUP
Dr. Sardjito are studied and the prediction of the main
cause is found, it is easier to educate society on the
xisk factors of the main cause.
Objective: To know the number of sudden death cases, the
age group, sex and time of death with the highest number
of sudden death cases from 2005-2014 and tg know the
prediction of the cause of the sudden death
Method: This study’ is an observational descriptive study.
The sample for the study is taken from the visum et
repertum in Forensic Installation Unit RSUP Dr. Sardjito
from 2005-2014
Results: The number of sudden death cases found is 120
cases with 79.16% malé cases and 20.84% female cases. 64%
of the sudden death cases happened in nighttime whereas
36% occurred in the daytime. 418 of the cases occurred in
young adults, 35% occurred in middle aged adults, 23%
occurred in old aduits and just 1% occurred in children.
57.5% of cases were due to respiratory disease, 40% due
to cardiovascular disease, 0.83% due to central nervous
disease and 1.67% due :to gastrointestinal disease.
Conclusion: There are 120 cases with the highest groups
being male (79.16%), young adults (41%), in the nighttime
(64%) and due to respiratory related disease (57.5%)
