ECUI 526: Field Experience II Lesson #3 Inquiry Based
Title The Cell Membrane
Subject Area(s) Biology Grade Level 10th Grade Summary of the This lesson will provide an interactive, Lesson virtual experience with the concept of osmolality to gain an understanding of the benefits of the cell membrane and its particular structure. Standards: (as 3.1.B.A5; CC.3.5.9-10.D applicable)

Essential Questions Which way will water move, in or out of
the cell in a hypotonic/hypertonic/isotonic concentration? What happens to the cell in the different solutions? Objectives Students will be able to: Define hypertonic/hypotonic/isotonic. Discuss which way water moves in various solute concentrations. Describe what happens to the cell in various solute concentrations Vocabulary: Hypertonic; hypotonic; isotonic; concentration gradient
Estimated Time 50 minutes
Materials Required Computer with access to internet; print out of lab questions Procedure BEFORE: Bell Ringer what characteristics of the cell membrane allow it to regulate what flows in and out? DURING: On board write definition of hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic. Discuss what these mean with the class. Have students access the Cell Membrane Virtual lab and pass out lab report sheets. Discuss what they will be doing in the lab and recap what they should be looking for. o Go over questions on lab o Concepts in lab report Hypothesis on direction of water movement in hypertonic/hypotonic/iso tonic solutions Hypothesis on what happens to the cell in each solution concentration. Description of methods Observations related to both hypotheses Conclusion was your hypothesis supported AFTER: Collect lab report worksheets if complete. If no complete assign for homework to be turned in the next day Formative Assessment Lab Report Student Resources Computer w/ internet access; Lab Report sheets Accommodations All accommodations or modifications will be in line with IEP.
