Slide 1:

The California Native Plant GATEway Garden is the newest addition to

the UC Davis Arboretum. This garden highlights include Daviss
hyperlocal plants, which are plants that grow only within 25 miles of
our city. This is a garden that only exists here and is unique to the
Davis community.

Slide 5:
This garden was not a one-man project, it was a community-wide
project that brought Davis together. This Garden was funded by the
Downtown Davis Parkway Greening Project under California Prop 84.

The entirety of the garden, including the sculpture, plants, and

intricacies, required the input of the community.

Moreover, the garden has many ecological and environmental features

that help to maintain an eco-friendly environment. These features
include the gravel permeable pavers, porous concrete, multiple block
wood benches, and runnel features.
Slide 2:
The most recent addition to the Arboretum is the California Native
Plant GATEway Garden. After three years of careful design and
planning with input from the loving and interactive Davis community,
construction started in the summer of 2013 and Davis finally welcomed
a new garden. This garden has different points of interest, from the
shovel sculpture to the hyperlocal plants that occur within a 25 mile
radius to the city of Davis. This garden has a prime location because it
is the gateway between the Davis community and the UC Davis
campus. This is an engaging destination with native plants that
provides a welcoming entry to the arboretum from downtown Davis.
Slide 3:
This particular garden has over 25,000 grasses, rushes, sedges, and
wildflowers that are endemic to the surrounding areas of Davis and
Lower Putah Creek.

Though not hyperlocal to Davis, The Purple Needle Grass, which is the
California state grass, has found a new home in the GATEway garden.

This grass was designated as our official state grass in 2004 because it
can be found in multiple parts of California.

This grass can be found behind the shovel arch. This bunchgrass turns
purple in spring so look out for this plant among the other blooming
plants.
Slide 4:
There are plenty of activities for visitors and their family, friends, and
dates to partake in. The GATEway Garden provides a serene and
relaxing atmosphere.

You can sit on the bench and enjoy the view and the output of this
community effort. In addition, there are amenities from the entrance of
the Shovel arch, including Whole Foods, The Habit, Pinkberry, Plutos,
GAP, and many more.

You can grab a To-Go box from any of the delicious restaurants and sit
at the tables and enjoy the breathtaking view.

If you are looking to be more active, then you can bring a bike and
stroll through the garden.
