Accident, Illness and Emergency Policy

As I childminder there will be times when I have to deal with an ill or

hurt child. The procedures below will be followed:

Illness

If your child is unwell, I request that they are kept home until
they are well enough to attend. Please do not bring your child in
with Calpol or having administered this to them already as this
indicates they are not well enough to be attending the setting. I
am required to consider the other children in my care and how to
minimise cross infection.

If a child becomes unwell in my care (more than a common cold), I

will contact parents as soon as possible and ask them to collect
their child.
I will ensure the child is made to feel comfortable whilst in my
care e.g. offer the child regular sips of water to keep them
hydrated and remove some clothing to cool the child down if
necessary.

If a child has an allergy, the details will be kept in the childs

personal record and also displayed on the wall so everyone is
aware.

I will not administer new medication to any child in my care in

order to avoid them having an unexpected reaction/allergy to the
medication.

If I am unwell I will try my utmost to give parents as much notice

as possible in order for parents to make alternative child care
arrangements.
Childhood Illnesses

Guidance on Infection control in schools and other childcare settings

lists common childhood illnesses and the recommended period your
child will be required to stay at home. If I child presents with any of
these illnesses I will refer to the guidelines stated in the document
and inform parents of the required time the child will be required to
stay at home.

Medication

The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage

(2014) states that medicines must not usually be administered
unless they have been prescribed for a child by a doctor, dentist,
nurse or pharmacist (medicines containing aspirin should only be
given if prescribed by a doctor). Children should never be given
medicines containing aspirin unless a doctor has prescribed that
medicine for that child.

I will administer all medication, pre-scribed and non prescribed as

long as the medication is clearly labelled. Prescribed medicines
must be clearly labelled with the childs name, date of birth, the
dosage and frequency and have a date that is relevant to the
period and an expiry date.

Out of date medicines or decanted medicines will not be

administered.

Medication will be stored in sealed plastic container either in the

fridge (at the back) or a locked or out of reach cupboard.
Parents must advise of any dosages administered prior to
attending my setting, and if the medication is new to the child, I
will not administer the medication for the first time in case of
an allergic reaction.

A record of the medication will be recorded each time it is

administered to a child, and parents will be informed on the same
day and be required to sign the record.

If I child is on a course of antibiotics I kindly request they are

kept at home for 48 hours after the first administration of the
antibiotic.

Accidents

As a childminder I will do my utmost to reduce the risk of an

accident/injury happening. I am a qualified Paediatric First Aider.
However if an accident did occur, I will follow the procedures below:

I will have access to a well-stocked first aid box at all times and
a basic first aid box when I am off premises with the children.

I will write a detailed record of accidents and the first aid

treatment received. This will be kept in the accident folder and
shared with parents on the same day. The accident record will
require parental signature.

If an accident occurred off premises I would administer first aid

as relevant on site.
Off premises I will always carry my work mobile phone which will
contain emergency contact details for every child in my care so I
can contact parents if needed. In addition consent forms will be
taken with me on all outings so again I have access to contact
numbers if needed.

Written consent will be obtained for parents to allow me

permission to seek emergency medical treatment and
hospitalisation.

I will call my emergency back-up who is . in the

event I am required to accompany a child to hospital. They will
contact the parents of the other children and ask to collect their
child as soon as possible. If this is not possible for any reason, I
will take all children with me and contact parents to collect their
child/ren.

I am legally obliged to share information with Ofsted regarding

any serious accidents, illness, injury to or death to a child and the
action taken as soon as possible or within 14 days.

Fire/Emergency Procedure

The Early Years Foundation Stage and Welfare Requirements 2014,

page 27, section 3.55 require providers to take reasonable steps to
ensure the childrens safety in case of fire or other emergencies.

In the case of an emergency and when I am required to evacuate the

setting with the children the following will be done:

I will remain calm and tell the children who understand to stop
what they are doing and form a line.

We will all walk out of the house through the fire exit and wait at
the assembly point. If there are children who need to be carried
out of the setting, I will do this.
I will take my work mobile with me and the list of the children in
my care on that day. I will contact the emergency services and
parents from my work phone

The designated fire exit will be clearly identifiable used and I

will ensure the door is easy accessible and clutter free.

Practice emergency evacuation will be undertaken monthly with all

the children in my setting. A record will be kept of these practice
evacuations.

Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and fire blankets will be

checked regularly to ensure they are in working condition and not
damaged. If they need replacing, this will be done as soon as
possible.

Escape Route

Exits are available at the front and back door. Keys are kept on the
either the hook or the coat hanger shelves next to the doors. If we
are upstairs we will exit via the stairs and out either fire exits.

Fire Assembly Point

Across the house opposite House Number 16.
