INTRODUCTION

This design note covers the geotechnical and structural design of test pile (TP-2) to be tested for
initial vertical load test & initial lateral load test near P143 Location Between Seva Sadan
Chowk & Gitanjali Chowk in Nagpur. The location of test pile is mentioned in the drawing. The
reference Bore Hole for design of test pile TP-2 has been taken as BH-P-120. The geotechnical
parameters have been taken from the soil report which has been attached with this design note.

A preliminary design of pile has been carried out for a pier near the test pile location. The
maximum vertical and horizontal load coming on a single pile comes out to be 637t & 24t .
However, for load testing, we have taken the working test load as 725t for initial vertical load
test and 30t for initial lateral load test. The design of pile has been attached as Annexure-A.

Load Carrying Capacity of Pile in Rock

Method 1 : Rock is hard rock or RQD is there.

Method 2 : Weak Rock, RQD = 0 or (CR+RQD)/2 or strata not classified as a granular or clayey soil or when crushing
strength <10 MPa
Date: 11-05-17 Note No. 11568/DD/DN-02

By: RJN Sheet No.

Method 2 : Ultimate capacity of piles socketed into Rock, Qu (in Newton)

Qu = Re + Raf = Cub.Nc.Ab + As.Cus

Allowable Capacity of Pile, Qallow = (Re/3) + (Raf/6)

Re = Ultimate End Bearing

Raf = Ultimate side socket shear

Cub = Average shear strength below base of pile (for the depth of 2*dia of pile), based on N value

Approx N value (From pile tip to 2*dia of pile depth) = 150

Cub = 1.3 MPa

Nc = 9

Ab = Cross-sectional area of pile at base = / 4 * 1200^2

2
= 1130973.4 mm
Here, Length of Socket = 4.00 m
So for friction capacity effective socket length = 4 - 0.3 m = 3.70 m
2
As = Surface area of Socket = pi()*1200*3700 = 13948671.4 mm

Cus = Ultimate shear strength of rock along socket length

= maximum 3.0 MPa for M35 grade of concrete

Layer 1 Layer 2 Layer 3 Layer 4 Layer 5 Layer 6

N Value 14 95 150 0 0 0
Cus (in MPa) = 0 0 1.3 0 0 0
Socket Length (m) 0 0 3.7 0 0 0
Surface area of socket = As (mm2) 0 0 1E+07 0 0.0E+00 0.0E+00
Raf = As.Cus = 0 0 2E+07 0 0.0E+00 0.0E+00
Total Raf = 18133272.8 N = 1813.3 ton

Re = Cub.Nc.Ab = 1.3 * 9 * 1130973.4 = 13232388.8 N = 1323.2 ton

Maximum allowable end bearing after dividing by factor of safety (=3) = 5 MPa
Hence, Maximum Re = 5 * 1130973.4 * 3 = 16964601.0 N = 1696.5 ton

So, Design value of Re = Minimum of ( 1323.2 , 1696.5 ) ton = 1323.2 ton

Raf = As.Cus 1813.3 ton

Allowable Capacity of Pile, Qallow = (Re/3)+(Raf/6) = 1323.2 / 3 + 1813.3 / 6 = 743.283 ton
For Design purpose consider 725 ton
Date: 11-05-2017 Note No. 11568/DD/DN-02

STUP Consultants P. Ltd. By: RJN

Design Vertical Load = 725.0 ton (for 8.0 m Pile Length)

Test Load (Factor = 2.5) = 1812.50 ton
ULS Load on Pile = 1.5 * 1812.5 = 2718.75 ton
Diameter of the Test Pile 1200.0 mm

Grade of Concrete of Pile = M35

So, compression capacity of the Pile = 0.4 fck Ac
= 0.4 * 35 * /4 * 1.2^2
= 1583.36 ton
< 2718.75 ton
Hence, extra reinforcement to be provided to resist the extra load.

Since during Vertical Load test no Bending Moment is there, therefore pile has been considered as a column
and as per Cl. 15.6.3.2 (Equation 14) of CBC, the maximum permissible load of the Pile in compression = 0.4 fck .A
+ fyc.Asc
Where, fck = characteristic strength of concrete = 35.0 N/mm2
2
Ac = Area of the Pile = /4 *1200^2 = 1130973.4 mm
fyc = Design compressive strength of the reinforcement = fy / (Ym+fy/2000)
2
For Fe 500 grade of reinforcement, fy = 500 N/mm
Ym = 1.15
Therefore, fyc = 500 / (1.15+500/2000) = 357.143 N/mm2

Provided Reinfircement = 32mm diameter 42 Nos.

42 * /4 *32^2 = 33778.40 mm2

So, compression capacity of the Pile = 0.4 fck.Ac + fyc.Asc

= 0.4 * 35 * /4 * 1.2^2
= 27897343.39 N
= 2789.73 ton
> 2718.75 ton
Hence, Provided Reinforcement is Safe

Mimimum Steel required = 0.4 % (as per Cl. 6.11.1 of IS 2911 Part I, Sec-II )

Ast = 33778.40 mm2

= 33778.4 / 1130973.4 * 100%
= 2.99 % of Pile Cross sectional Area
Hence Safe

32 mm Diameter Bars of 42 No.s has to be provided.

Lateral Test Pile
This design note consists of lateral load test for pile. For testing factored design lateral load to
be applied at pile top and deflection at pile top and pile cut-off level to be measured. From this
data the deflection of pile at design scour level to be calculated.

Here, Scour depth = 0

3
Here, the pile is free head pile. Therefore, the deflection at pile = PL /3EI

As per IS : 2911 Part 4, Clause 7.4, Horizontal Capacity of the pile will be minimum of
a) 50% of Lateral Load for 12mm deflection at scour level &
b) Lateral Load for 5mm deflection at the same level.

The Centrifugal Force is calculated on the basis of Clause 2.5 of IRS Bridge Rule. As the rails are fixed directly on RCC plinth, the eccentricity of rail track is
ignored. EUDL (W) has been calculated from the table given in Appendix-II for MBG, which is for 25 T axel Load. This is an conservative approach. As an
alternative, Reactions based calculations are detailed below in page 4A; which is more appropriate especially for multi tracks.
