despite loan

LAKEWOOD - While the Lakewood public school


community breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday when the
3 state announced an $8.5 million bailout, substantial
staff and budget cuts still loom.
In announcing the help, state officials said the $8.5
million loan to Lakewood will preserve 127 teaching and
staff positions, including 106 classroom teachers. That
still leaves more than a dozen positions on the chopping
block, including guidance counselors and librarians,
said Kimberlee Shaw, president of the Lakewood Edu-
cation Association, the local teachers union.
Also unclear is the extent of cuts to after-school pro-
grams. The state said boys and girls athletics would be
saved, but mentioned only baseball, soccer and track.
4 School Board President Barry Iann said the status of
other sports is unknown. Orchestra and band were the
only other extracurricular activities listed as being
preserved, though summer school also is expected to
continue.
Programs beyond that drama and other groups
face an uncertain future as well.
A week before the loan was revealed, Lakewood laid
off around 140 teachers and staff about a quarter of
its employees and faced the prospect of cutting after-
