1
Introduction
Topics covered include the structure of matter, chemical reactions, solvents and organic
chemistry. In introducing the structure and states of matter and the chemical elements, an
elementary discussion of atomic structure and the bonding of elements to form compounds is
given. Further development requires a discussion of the mole concept. This leads to a study
of chemical reactions, with discussions on oxidation and reduction, acids and bases, energy
changes in reactions, reaction rates and chemical equilibrium. The subject of solvents
concentrates on water and finally there is an introduction to organic chemistry.

Broad Learning Outcomes

Advisable Prior Study

This unit is designed for students with little or no background in chemistry who wish to gain an
understanding of basic chemistry. Entry is restricted to students without a satisfactory pass in
TEE Chemistry. In semester two, the natural follow-on unit is Biological Chemistry 106
(510.106). However, enrolment in Organic Chemistry 102 (510.102) is possible for students
who have performed well in Introductory Chemistry 105 (510.105).

Textbook Requirements
Introduction to General, Organic and Biochemistry (7 th Edition)
Authors: Bettelheim, Brown and March
Publisher: Thomson- Brooks/Cole

2
Technical Requirements
Laboratory Notebook
You must record everything during laboratory classes in a dedicated Notebook. The notebook
must be properly bound and of A4 size with non-removable pages. All writing and calculations
in the laboratory notebook must be made in ink.

Laboratory Coat
All students must wear laboratory coats at all times in the laboratory. Students must provide
their own laboratory coat (available at Uniprint in the Guild Village).

Safety Glasses and Gloves

All students must wear safety glasses and gloves at all times in the laboratory (prescription
glasses are not adequate). Students will be provided with safety glasses and gloves.

Calculator
You should have a pocket calculator available for use in the laboratory; it should have the
means for determining the log of a number.

Software Requirements
Students are required to arrange their own access to word processing and spreadsheet and
graphing software. Microsoft Word and Excel are recommended and instructions and
templates contained in course materials will assume that this is the software employed.
