11 Celebrating eleven years in 2007
A highlight of the NSW festival scene, the Willoughby Spring Festival is the
largest festival on the North Shore and one of the few remaining true street
festivals in Australia.
Growing in popularity every year, and celebrating eleven years in 2007, the
month-long festivities promote community and business side-by-side and
celebrate the people, and their passions, of the North Shore. Throughout
September the City of Willoughby staff convenes and promotes more than
forty events that celebrate cultural diversity, sporting prowess, green thumbs,
world-class music, the great outdoors, kids of all ages, the local environment
and our heritage.
Festival events cross a wide variety of interest groups. The Willoughby Art
Prize, a Fathers Day Fun Run, a Moon Festival, the Funnybone 500 Comedy
Short Film Festival, an environmental photography competition and a behind
the scenes visit to local art studios are just the tip of an iceberg of great fun
and community celebrations.
Surrounded by 140 quality arts, crafts, environment and gourmet food stalls,
the fair becomes six themed zones.
Located on the Civic Centre Lawn is a frenetic fun packed day of circus
antics and educational childrens games at KIDZONE.
Gain some street cred on Spring Street and chill out at the Y(outh) Lounge
while being entertained by a battle of the bands, beat boxing, breakdancing,
table tennis tournaments and doughnut eating competitions.
The Civic Centre houses the salubrious Art Prize and Spring Flower Show.
Anderson Street is renamed Rhythm Road to promote its Jazz Stage (wine
and cheese tastings are located here).
Lastly, south of Victoria Ave, Anderson Road becomes Green Street with
bush gardens, a sustainability house, rainwater tanks, neighbourhood maps
and experts on hand to answer all your environmental queries.
The festival is aimed at involving the entire community and so its participants
are toddlers, families, youth, 20-35s, seniors, ethnic groups, music and arts
lovers, local and regional businesses and tourism and sporting
organisations.
Attracting visitors and shoppers from all over Sydney and the Central Coast
of NSW, the festival has attracted in excess of 100,000 people each year, for
the past four years, at its StreetFair alone.
