Consequences of smoking

Smoking destroys cilia which mean our respiratory passages are less protected.

Disease Description
Bronchitis Inflammation of bronchi caused by infection.
(smoking or air pollution)
Emphysema Emphysema is a progressive lung disease in which lung tissue
surrounding alveoli is destroyed. This leaves alveoli unsupported,
allowing them to enlarge and eventually rupture.
Less area available for gas exchange.
Lung cancer Lung cancer can affect the bronchi or the alveoli. In either case, the
cells proliferate (increase rapidly in number), obstruct airflow, and
prevent gas exchange.
Causes tobacco smoking and exposure to environmental carcinogens,
such as asbestos, silicon, coal dust, and radon gas.
