The word pathology itself is the science of the causes and effects of disease. This helps to
better understand what a pathologist is. A pathologist studies pathology, which is defined
above. They can study lab samples from body tissue to find a diagnosis also. Many pathologists
work in hospitals, but they can also work in schools, medical laboratories, colleges, and
universities. An example of a pathologist in the book would be Tony Johnson. Tony supervised
Nancy Jaax while in a level four experiment when she breached her suit.
Virologist
A virologist studies virology, the study of viruses and virus like agents. They help contribute to
the making of a vaccine by figuring out how the virus spreads. By figuring that out they can help
other scientists find a way to stop the spreading. A virologist usually works in hospitals,
pharmaceutical companies, colleges, or universities. An example of a virologist in the book is
Peter Jahrling. He was commissioned to identify the virus that killed the Reston monkeys.
Veterinarian
Epidemiologists
An epidemiologist studies the branch of medicine that deals with the patterns of diseases. They
do fieldwork to determine the cause of disease and the risk of the disease. They work in places
like offices, laboratories, hospitals, and colleges, and universities. Joseph McCormick is an
epidemiologist who was the Chief of the Special Pathogens Branch.
Microscopist
Microscopist use microscopes to identify microorganisms that are too small to see with the
naked eye. They usually work in a laboratory setting, hospital, or in colleges, or universities. In
the book the Hot Zone Tom Geisbert is a microscopist who operates the electron microscope at
his facility.
