Module Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this module the student should be able to answer
questions on the HN remote equipment, including the following topics
Identify the different types of indoor units supported by the HN System and the
characteristics of each
Determine length limitations or restrictions of IFL cables
Select the appropriate outdoor equipment
Identify the different types of antennas supported by the HN System
Be able to correctly cable a remote site so that communication is established
between the NOC and the remote and the remote and the configuration PC

HN System Topology
The HN System offers high-speed IP satellite connectivity between the HN
NOC and multiple HN remote terminals
The HN System has two types of remote terminals
Remote types
o HN9260 and HN9460
An HN remote is a satellite router with its own embedded software
Multiple IP devices can connect to an HN remote for Internet/intranet access
The HN remote is independent of any IP devices connected to it
o Computers connecting to the remote LAN may run any operation system, such as Windows,
Unix, and Linux
An HN remote has an embedded Web sever providing access to its system
information and status monitoring
Basic Web access provides configuration information and status/statistics
Advanced Web access provides additional status/statistics as well as a
commissioning utility

The purpose of the antenna is to reflect the signal from the ODU to the satellite and to
gather the signal from the satellite and reflect it into the ODU
The remotes support different size antennas and different shapes
Rectangular and circular antennas
74 cm (rectangular), 98 cm, 1.2 meter, 1.8 meter antennas, etc.

Antenna should have line of sight to the satellite at installation and in the future
The mount and underlying structure must hold the antenna pointed
toward the satellite even during severe conditions
The site should be easy to access for installation and routine maintenance

Outdoor Equipment Installation
Antenna Placement Considerations
The site survey report recommends an antenna location that meets these
criteria
o Aesthetics Antenna placement must be relatively inconspicuous to building
visitors and compatible with the appearance of the building and surrounding
community
o View Antenna's view of the satellite must be guaranteed currently as well as in
the future
o Strength The mount and underlying structure must hold the antenna pointed
toward the satellite under all normal conditions and support the antenna under the
most severe conditions
o Safety The site must allow installation, routine maintenance, and operation
without jeopardizing people or the building
o Ground When selecting a site, must be accessible and close to the cable path.
