LO1 UNDERSTAND THE REQUIRMENTS OF WORKING TO A BRIEF BY THAHEEMA KHATUN

A Contractual Brief is a judicial document, which would be produced by the freelancer and the
client. The layout of this brief is uncomplicated and comprehensible to read through as it
alludes to the fact that the client would be able to finish their brief in detail without there
being any sorts of doubt. The contractual brief will show the obligation that would be need by
the company because it will emphasise how the company arranges the work. This document
will clearly highlight the expectation of the clients, the prices they have agreed on and as well
as the payment terms which they have agreed on as well. The advantage of a contractual
brief is that this document gives the company a clear image of what the customer wants them
to produce and also making sure that the company commences a solid price range. This will
ensure that the customer and the employee have consented to a set pay, alongside the
employee with use of the contractual brief. However, a disadvantage to the customer is that
they will need a large workload from the employer. Also if the media company expresses and
believes that there is some kind of issues within the brief they will have to make the product
to their own standards. This illustrates that they will not be creating the product that has been
set by the customer, therefore, in the result of this the client may conclude to the idea of
taking some legal actions and this could result the company of having a bad reputation for not
completing projects to a set brief. An example, where a contractual brief has been used is in
the show Ordinary Lies where the BBC writer room had told them that they needed a show at
9pm, however, the content they created they had more freedom in that aspect.
A formal brief is a document that will comprehensively have detailed information about what
the customer want the company to fulfil. This would be effortless document, as it would
withhold from adding any information, which not needed to the client or employee. This brief
only provide the information to only be able to create the product that the client has
requested for and any issues that the company would like to discuss during the negotiation
with the client. The client and the company employee will agree on the project, also this brief
will not be able to bind legally always. There are also some advantages and disadvantage
when it comes to a formal brief and one of the advantages is that the client would be open to
any problems and issues that the company producing the product has in changing it slightly.
This means that the creative aspect of producing the product would come naturally. An
disadvantage of this brief is that the company may feel that the client is not producing any
ideas or more information because its not legally blinded which means that its not secured
that this will go through.
A informal brief is less professional than an original brief and can sometime been seen as
being a amateur brief, however this does show the project that been created verbally but this
brief will not need any needs of a written document. This means that this will be a discussion
in what the client want between the employer and then this would come to an agreement
over the information of the contract. Within this types of brief there are some advantages and
disadvantage that you should look at which is that the advantage of this brief is that there no
guideline where both parties have to follow when come to the brief. The employer would be
able to direct the document before the client completes the document. An disadvantage to
the informal brief is that there is no written document which means that the client or
employee wont have any records of what there saying which could lead to the client not
paying the employee. Therefore, there could be some legal problems.
A commission brief is when a large company, such as The Sun, employ a smaller company
who are independent to produce their product for them. The company other than an external
client negotiates this type of brief. Within the commission brief there are some advantages
and disadvantages that the companies would need to look at which is that the advantage is
that the company do not need to do all of the work and can hire a sub-contract. Which means
that they can make more money. A disadvantage is that there could be some huge conflict in
producing the product because they are huge company working with a smaller one. However,

because the brief is not negated with the company it may not be in the standards that they
required it to be.
Tender brief is when the client is in control of the advertisement, which states that, the need a
media product to be produced. Which mean that a possible employer, such as Production
Company will begin with the brief, the budget and the proposal. This means that this will be
pitched to the client to lock in the chance of acquiring the work that was done before. The
client will decide on the proposals, which are featured in their group of candidates. The
advantage of a tender brief is that
Reading through a brief is vital, since, if you do not read through a brief you are more likely to
make mistakes and miss any crucial information that the client has requested you to do.
Reading through the brief is highly significant because the employer would need to
understand what the project is before they start the process of the project. Reading through
the brief the employer will be able to figure out the deadline, budget, target audience and
what is the product they want you to create.
The negotiated brief is when the client and employer will come to an agreement of the brief of
the project; this means that it will include the last couple of ideas by the employer and the
client. This is very crucial that both of the client and employer are able to agree upon the brief
because if they do not this will later on cause some major problems for both of the employer
and client in the future. The advantage of a negotiated brief is that they can get a wide range
of input and suggestions, which later on make the project a huge success. However, a
disadvantage is the degree of discretion in interpreting the brief because both of the client
and the employer might read the brief and have different types of ideas in the way to stir the
project. Therefore, this means that the employer would need to make the production how the
client want them to look like. The way of doing is booking in meetings and giving pitch to your
client. When looking at negotiating brief there is also some constraint, which are the legal,
ethical and regulatory constraints because this will be shown to the public. For example, when
I had to create my advert, the brief gave me a lot of flexibility because it showed me what I
needed to provide (like the research, audience research and etc.). This is so the employer
and client do not offend the members of public by putting in any homophobic or racist
remarks and the places where they can regulate this are the ASA and Ofcom. However, the
legal constraints are the toughest constraints to avoid, as it requires the employer to
understand the laws and regulations. Whereas ethical constraints can be changed by having
different ethic groups working in a product so it gives the solid idea that it will not go against
any ethic backgrounds. Many companies and freelancers use the sign off sheets which make
the business efficient as it client will not be able to change their idea frequently and gets the
job done on its deadline. However, there can be amendments made to propose for the final
product in duration of making the project but not when the sign off sheet is signed off. The
client can make amendments to the condition but this will affect the final-product. Such as if
they wanted a different type of colour scheme this will effect the companys work hours and
would needed to be worked around it. Lastly, the negotiating the free is significant as all the
cost of making the project would needed to be shown to high quality. This is so the client
knows a detailed list of all the costs and can settle on the final cost.
The opportunities for self-development advances when I was working with a brief, for example,
making a corporate film about loan shark Ive developed some key new skills. These skills
included learning communication techniques with the client, producing the product and expanding
the different types of ideas for this corporate film in idea development. Working with the IMLT
means that I had to take a lot of little information such as the she wanted and what she doesnt
want. But working for a production/media company you might have two different brief which
include a graphics brief and movie brief and can range from a tender or contractual. Therefore,
multitasking is key to ensure that you are able to work the best of your ability. Lastly, making
contributions to a brief the creator, such as I will have a lot of input in my corporate film because
it is not a contractual brief. This means that Id be able fully develop my idea and explore different

type of planning and filming. The main advantage from this is that this can lead to high quality
work for the client.
