Nokia simplified WCDMA BB dimensioning rules
Nokia`s CE refers to the capacity requirement of 1 User voice/16 kbps (UL&DL)
Nokias unique base band design allows for dynamic allocation of resources for uplink
and downlink, according to the prevailing traffic situation
Channel Element consumption for uplink and downlink for R99/R4 users need not be
dimensioned separately; only the traffic volume for each service needs to be estimated
(AMR, 384 kbps NRT data, 64k CS data..) in initial dimensioning
No site visit to optimize for changing Traffic mix
1 type of HW supports CCH, DCH, HSUPA, HSDPA
384 kbps supported in UL and DL for both HSDPA and R99 services

Base band resources are

symmetric

384 kbps uplink 0 384 kbps downlink

Nokia simplified WCDMA BB dimensioning rules

The formula applied to calculate the required CE per Node B is shown below:
CE required = CCH (CE) + HSDPA Scheduler (CE) +
+ MAX ( R99 Traffic CE for DL, R99 Traffic CE for UL)

Where:
CCH(CE) represents the number of CE required for CCH
HSDPA Scheduler represents the number of CE required for HSDPA scheduling which
will depend on the number of codes required.
R99 Traffic CE for UL/DL represents the CE which are going to be required to handle all
the traffic in the node B (includes SHO traffic). This term should include the HSDPA DL
SRB and HSDPA UL R99 Return Channel.

Tables for the required CE for the above components are shown in the following
slides
Note: Dimensioning should be performed for BH traffic including SHO traffic too.

Flexi WCDMA BTS System Module
Common Channel Allocation dimensioning rules
1 System module (FSMA or FSMB) supports 1-6 cells CCH
2 System modules are always required for configurations >6cells
Common channels need to be included in the BB CE dimensioning process

Example :Node B Paquete 1
Max Node B Capacity Required:
Voz AMR :120 Erlangs
Datos HSDPA :6 Mbits/s

Traffic scenario : 80% voice, 20 % data

BH traffic Node B:
Voz AMR :96 Erlangs
Datos HSDPA : 1.2 Mbits/s

Additional considerations:
16 Simultaneous HSDPA users
128 kbits/s UL Return Channel HSDPA
SHO overhead 30%
10% Safety margin in Dimensioning
Voice QoS (Blocking) 2%
Maximum DL Load of Cell 80 85%
Maximum UL Load of Cell 70%

Example :Node B Paquete 1

Rel 99 voice CE Dimensioning:

CE Required 1 voice call = 1 UL /1 DL

To assure less than 2% Blocking we apply Erlang- B:

Total Voice traffic in Node B = Erlang B ( 96* (1+ Dim Safety Margin), QoS =
2%) = 120 Erlangs

We include the SHO overhead margin (SHO traffic):

UL /DL CE required Voice = 120 ( 1+ SHO overhead) = 120* ( 1+ 30%) = 155

Calculate the power needed in DL to support the above voice traffic

Example :Node B Paquete 1

HSDPA Data Dimensioning:

To support 6Mbits/s per Node B when we have the 100% data traffic
scenario 15 codes per Node B are required, ie, 80 CE

Additionally we have to consider the number CE required for 16 HSDPA

simultaneous users

Verification that with remaining DL node B power we can achieve desired

throughput

HSDPA Scheduler CE = 80
HSDPA UL R99 Return Channel CE = 16 users * 4 CE ( 128kbits/s) = 64
CE
HSDPA DL SRB CE = 16 users * 1 CE (SRB) = 16

Example :Node B Paquete 1

Considering 3 cells per Node B:

CCH CE required = 26
CE per Node B =

=CCH (CE) + HSDPA Scheduler (CE) + MAX ( R99 Traffic CE for DL, R99 Traffic CE for UL) =

= 26 (CCH) + 80 (HSDPA Scheduler) + MAX ( 155 (Voice UL) + 64 (UL HSDPA return CH), 155 (Voice
DL) + 16 (HSDPA DL SRB))=
