Summary of the Event (at least 3 major points; each point will have its own paragraph)

A. In a lab scientist are using paralyzed monkeys for a system they have made in
order to move around with two special equipments that are inserted in the monkey to
test out the system. The system is technological and scientific since they use animals
and are observing how this system will work and what they need to do. These scientist
want to make a system that will help the lower part of the body since in recent years
they have made a system to regain a mans paralyzed arm.The scientist hope to work
on this system even more to help people and be more sure of how his system will work.
B. Even though they might be finished they still need to do more examinations to be
100% accurate. Gregoire Courtine said the following in the next ten years to humans
for therapy that would in aid in rehabilitation and improve recovery. According to this
article and statement it would take so long is because they want to improve it since you
can't be sitting for so long then it will have an effect on you. Using this system is also in
need of attention since a person of two feet don't have so much balance as a monkey of
four feet.
C. The system done by the scientist is made up of a long cord that is inside the
body that runs to the leg and a chip is attached to the brain. It uses new developments
in the brain recording but also requires a computer to decode and translate the signals
brain signals to be sent to the spinal cord. The sensor allows for the person to signal the
leg what command to do and helps the person to walk. The sensor the scientists that
created this system inserted 100 electrodes in the cortex that controls the leg and
makes it able to move around.
Your Opinion of the Event (at least 3 sentences).
My opinion on this event is that their system is really good for helping people with this
new system that they made to help animals who are paralyzed.Since scientists have
experimented with a chimp there could be a possibility for humans to also use but of
course, they're things that could oppose to that opinion.Even though there are a few
problems that can happen to a human using this system of technology scientist should
try using other ways in order for this system to work on a human.

Relate your Event to a Historical Event (compare and contrast with current event).
My event relates to the historical event Monkeys Think, Moving Artificial Arm as Own. These two
articles have several things in common like a scientist using animals in order to test out their
system of mechanical inventions, both think that these systems need more work on before
theyre used on an actual person. The difference between the articles is that the article
Wireless Brain-Spine Connection Overcomes Paralysis in Monkey focuses on animals who are
paralyzed from their legs while article Monkeys Think, Moving Artificial Arm as Own focuses on
a system of monkeys who have learned how to control a mechanical arm by tiny sensors who
help them move.

Relate your Event to the a Theme (at least 3 sentences). SEE BACK FOR THEMES

The event I picked relates to the theme cultural interaction of technology and science
because it has a mixture of both. In the article the scientists use intellectual activity and
practical activity that they observe and experiment through science in order to perform
this type of experiment. The article also has technology involved since they use different
types of equipment for things to move like they want an example would be the sensors
used in order to move their legs.

Questions You Have About the Event (4).

1. Will you keep working on this experiment for it to be available for humans?
2. Would there be any changes?
3. Why test on animals and not on humans also?
4. Why would it take so long to transfer their developed system?
