healingoftheSelf,ofothers,ofsociety,andoftheworldatlarge.Afterall,wearetalkingaboutthe

prayerandmanifestedintentionsviathemeetingoftheWillofManandtheWillofGodiswhatthis

Theurgyisexplainedasbeingaemptstoinuencethedecidingfactorsinhumanlife.Aswefunction
ascocreatorswithGod,thisprocessinvolvesactivenotpassiveprayer.Thisprayerentailsthe
practitionertobefullyengagedinthefocusofWillandwiththermreinforcementofFaith.Thisfaithis
describedasbeingseparatefromBeliefbecauseFaithisnotaresultoraconclusiondrawnfromagivenset
ofcircumstancesthatallowustobeconvincedofanyparticularphilosophicaltruth.Faithstandsalone,
inthatitisarmresolveinthetruththatisneitherprovable,norunprovable.

ThepurposesofTheurgyaremany,andsomeofthesearehealing,blessing,exorcisms,protection,and
assistance.Whilethisisabitofabroadspectrumofends,ourpreviousexplanationsimplythatamystical
connectionwithDivineforcemustbeestablished.WhileTheurgydoesnotdictatewhatideaonemayhave
aboutthisDivinity,itisnonethelesseective,nomaerwhathumanideologicalconceptswehavethe
tendencytoimposeontheInnite.ToascribetheDeitywithagivenqualityistoimmediatelylimititbythe
connesofprimitivelanguageandincompleteunderstanding.Asthismysticalconnectionisnurtured,it
naturallyservesasabasisforapproachingtheritualconsciousnessthatisrequiredbythesolemnityof
theurgicoperations.ThesearealsosomeofthedierencesthatwemayseebetweenTheurgyand
Thaumaturgy(magic).

Prayer,beinganintegralchannelthatweemploytogaintheaentionofDivinityandtheconstituent
authoritiesofpower,isonethatdiersfromourusualconceptionofalowlyrequestwheninneed.Itis
describedasanemotionalUnioninrespecttotheforcesoftheAbove,outofLove.Thisisanaturalprocess
anddoesnotrequireanyeort,forthiswouldimplyalackofFaith,whichwepreviouslyaddressedasbeing
selfsucientandpromptedbynoparticularcircumstances.ItisalsoforthesereasonsthattrueTheurgy
couldneverbeahaphazardexperiment,norshoulditeverbedenedthroughanysortoftestof
metaphysicalphenomena.

Theurgicprayerislikenedtotheowofariver.Thismaymeanthatitisbothcalmandfree,butalso
focusedanddirected.Nothingabouttheowoftrueprayerallowsonetodoubtonesselfortobecome
distracted,norisitdevoidofnoblepurposeorimportantmeaning.Thisallowsustoanalyzewhatkindof
characteraTheurgistshouldhave.Amorallyvirtuousoperationcannotresultfromsomeonewith
deplorableintentionsandhabits,thusthelifestyleofatheurgistisclearlyimportant.Thisimpliesthat
theurgicoperationsarenotmerelyritualsintimeofconvenience,forthiswouldlikenittotheemptyand
mundaneprayersofthosewhoonlyturntoGodforfavorswhenthingsgowrongintheirlives.Someone
whounderstandsthesethingswillalsounderstandthattolivethislifestylewillbenaturalandthatto
ritualizeourprayerwillalsobenaturalaswell.

Ablackmagicianmaybedenedasonewhoshowstheoppositequalitiesofourdescriptionofanideal
theurgist;onewhoselshlyimposeshisownwillandsatisestheirownimmediatebasedesirestothe
detrimentofothers.Suchactionandmentalityisindirectoppositiontosomeonewhorealizestheirpurpose
asaproductivememberoffamily,society,etc.Thosewhoseektousesuchforceswillinevitablybuildstrong
reexesofkarmaagainstthemselves,whetherimmediateoreventual,fordestructivethoughtsandactions
canonlyproduceresultsofthesamequalityandnotofapositivenature.

Someofthebasicpreparationsfortheurgyare(aftercultivatingthemindsetofmoralvirtueaspreviously
outlined)learningtocontrolthestateofritualconsciousnessandtosetarequirementforthewavelengthof
mentalandspiritualvibrationtowardshigherthings.Thismaystartsimplyasgraduallypuingaway
thoughtsofmundanelife,calmingtheemotions,andraisingthethoughtstoproductiveandhealthythings
thatencouragegrowthandlove.Itisimportanttolettheannoyancesofdailylifefallaway,andthisoften
comeswithasteadypracticeofmeditativeawareness.Thismayalsoincludedietingorfasting,exercise,the
immersioninscripturalwisdomandseingonesgoalswithintheirparameters,keepinginmindthe
necessityofbothphysicalandspiritualhygiene,theinclusionofappropriatevestmentsthatreectthe
solemnityoftheoperation,andnallytheadjustingoftheenvironmenttomeetthesevibrationsintermsof
furniture,regalia,ritualimplements,lighting,andevensoundormusic.Everyconceivableaspectofthe
environmentshouldalwaysbeconsidered,aseachofthesefactorsheavilyaectsthestateofmind.

TheparticularlypotentforceoftheurgyistheinvocationoftheHolySpirit.IntheesotericChristian
tradition,theHolySpiritistheanimatingforcewhichllseveryspacebetweenourworldandtheworld
above,thatwhichiseverpresentanddeservesourutmostaentionandreverence.WheninvokingtheHoly
Spirit,spontaneousprayersasoftenobserved,whichrevealsamosthonestandlovingcommunicationwith
theDivine.Suchmomentsdonothavetobefeeredbycomplicatedritualoroverlyverboseincantations,
forthepathofMysticismisoftenonethatcaterstotheeectivityofhonestsimplicity.Thisistheresultof
thechannelofprayeraslongasitisundertheseconditions.Agoodprayerhasbeenlikenedtoaseedthat
eventuallygrowsandblossoms,andunderouranalysisoftheurgy,again,weseethatthisisacultivationof
alifelongaitudeandpractice,notjustasporadicexperiment.Keepinginmindtheeectsthatdrugs,diet,
andmostimportantlythemoraloutlook,allhaveaneectonourtheurgicoperationsandformapartofthe
biggerpictureastoourrealapproachtowardscombiningworshipandprayertowardsagivencause.

PsychismandSpiritualityaredenitelydierentthings,asmetaphysicaltalentsandgiftsofperceptionor
manipulationhaveverylile,ifany,dependenceononesstateofvirtuousliving.Thustodistractourselves
withemptyeortstowardsthedevelopmentofemptypsychicabilitiesdoesnotguaranteeanysortof
progresswithinourspirituallives,andthusshouldbeacautionwhenexploringsuchthings.Thisties
directlyintotheprincipalconditionoftheurgy,thealigningofconsciousness.Thisshouldbeunderstood
asthewholeconsciousness,notjustthementalthoughts,butalsotheemotionsandthefocusofWill,also.

TheconceptofKarmaasitrelatestoyourintentionswithinbothourmundaneandspirituallifeissimply
thatallistrulyconnected.Ouraitudehasadeniteaectonourdesiresandouractions,andevenour
thoughtscanproveourentirecharactertobequiteamalleablemedium.Wehavetheopportunitytoforge
ourdestiniesaswemakechoicesinourlives,allthemorechancesdowehavetohelprepairour
imperfectionsandaectourdestinywiththeurgy.Ifourintentionsarepureandwereinforcesuch
operationswithlivingsquarely,weonlystrengthenourtieswiththeBeyondaswedeepenourMystic
connections.

TheChristianMassisatheurgicoperationandisdesignedtodispersetheblessingsoftheHolySpirit
throughChristsgiftofsacriceandthecelebrationofthemysticEucharist.AssuchChristianusesof
bowingandgenuectingarecommonamongthetradition,itwouldnotbeuncommonoroutofplacetosee
thesepresentwithinapurelytheurgicaloperationofaChristian/Gnosticcharacter.

Theaimandpurposeofritualandparaphernaliaaretoolstoaidinritualconsciousness,andalsotoincrease
thenumberofsymboliccorrespondenceswithinceremony,forritualislivingsymbol.Theseelementsare
notspecicallynecessary,thoughtheyaidinraisingmentalvibrationsandsuchthingslikeregaliaallserve
toputthemindintoaproperstateoftheappreciationoftheoperationathand.Theseare,however,
dispensabletoalargedegree,becausetheessentialfacetoftheurgyisFaith,andFaithaloneisthemost
powerfultoolandistheonlyrealrequirement.

Peladansfaithbeginswhereknowledgeendsillustratesanimportantconcept.Intheesotericworlditis
verycommonandextremelyeasytooverintellectualizetheteachingswithoutdevelopingasoulful
understandingofemotionalexperience.Leinggoofmentalconstructsisdicult,andwhendealingwith
spiritualmaers,wemustrememberthatniteconceptsofthehumanmindandthewordswetrytotrap
themwithcandosuchthingsnojusticewhatsoever.ThusisourconstantsearchforTruthsometimes
obscuredbythehabitofoverthinkingandanalyzing,fortheurgydoesnotdealwiththeoreticalpropositions.

Whenpracticinginagroup,sucientcareshouldbeobserved,foragroupestablishesacollective
momentumofthoughtformscalledtheEgregore.ThisEgregorecanbepoisonedandtheeectivityofthe
purposesofthegroupwillbehamperedormisdirectedifitispoisonedbynegativeordestructive
personalities.

Anotherdanger,inadditiontofoolishlyenteringuponatheurgicoperationmerelytosatisfyonescuriosity
ortotestthepowersAbove,istoneverchargeamonetaryamountforspiritualservices.Notonlydoesthis
revealapervertedmotiveforwhatshouldbefreelygivenassistance,butitmayresultiscomplete
metaphysicalbackre.Thisisalsowhyitiswisetobewaryofanycharlatanwhoacceptspaymentfortheir
services.Thisreinforcestheconceptofsecrecyandsilence,andinthisrespect,itmaytakeonthemeaning
thatitisessentialtoworkforthegoodofmankindasawholebecauseitisinourabilitytodoso,andsuch
thingsarenotdoneoutofanylustofresultorulteriormotive.Thisisalsoextremelyingbecauseas
theurgistswhohavebeenproperlyinitiatedandtrainedinitsartsarepreparedforhealingritualsforthe
sick.Usingtheproperprecautionsandpreparations,thetheurgiststilldoesnotacceptpaymentforhealing
becauseitisthehealingofoneofthecellsofthewhole,thatwhichweareallinternallyandintegrally
connected.ToserveonesbrothersandsistersistoserveGod.

Insummary,theurgyisthemostseriousofallpracticesandincludesthemostperfectcommunionofall,
thatofheartfeltPrayer.WithoutFaithtoreinforcetheentireoperation,thetheurgicoperationwouldfail
completely.Withoutanunderstandingofhowitworks,theoperatorwillbemisguidedandpossibly
misdirecthisorherownWillandthustheentireforcebehindtheintent.Astrueprayeristhehighest,nay
thedeepest,formofmysticism,soshouldweseektoreachwithinourselvesandalsotothefurthestreachesof
theUniversetorealizethevastnessoftheHolySpirit.Thegoalofbecomingatheurgistisanobleone,one
thatrequiresitsparticipantstocultivateanoble,moral,andhonestlifestyleinaccordancewithDivine
principleandspiritualintegrity.
