Oxyacetylene Torches-How to Use

Use of a cutting torch is not something that just anybody should do without training. The first 4-steps below will talk
about putting a new tank on your oxyacetylene set and starting with step 5, how to use a cutting torch set. Employees have
said that it takes too long doing it this way, but this is the only safe way. Steps are listed in the order they should be done:
1. Remove protective cap from cylinder and inspect for evidence of grease and/or oil.
2. Blow out cylinder valve seats to remove dust and moisture.
3. Inspect regulator for grease and/or oil.
4. Make sure regulator key is turned OFF, then connect regulator.
5. Stand away from regulator key or handle, then open valves:
Oxygen-completely open.
Acetylene-partially open (1/4 to turn).
6. Purge system:
Open oxygen valve on torch.
Turn ON oxygen regulator and adjust to 40 PSI (50 PSI maximum).

Turn ON acetylene regulator and adjust to 3-5 PSI (15 PSI maximum).
Close acetylene valve on torch.
7. Light torch with flint striker:
Open acetylene valve on torch.
Light flame (striker should be about to inch from tip).
Adjust acetylene to bring flame back down to almost touching the tip.
Open oxygen valve slowly on torch and adjust flame.
8. Turn off torches after use:
Close oxygen valve on torch.
Close acetylene valve on torch.
9. In accordance with 30 CFR 56.4603, valves on cylinders shall be closed when the cylinders are being moved, if
the torch and hose are left unattended, and when the task is completed.
10. After closing, you need to purge the system again:
Open oxygen valve on torch.
Bleed off oxygen and close oxygen valve.
Open acetylene valve on torch.
