City Improvement Project

First Check Point Day 2

Planning Rubric
Today:
1. Title of Proposal : Improving the road system in the city to facilitate the traffic flow and
reduce the pollution released from cars by changing the structure of the road from a
conventional flat road into a tube-like structure that is made up of magnet.
2. Introduction Three sentences (can be modified later): Nowadays, Bangkok is considered
to be one of the city with the worst traffic in the world due to lack of management in road
system. Small or slight changes in the road structure could result in varying traffic conditions on
the road. The current production of harmful gases from massive number of vehicles on the road
contribute largely to causing pollution. Thus, the cars functioning can also be changed in a way
that harmful production of gases are stopped. Therefore, road system management needs a
careful plan and analysis on the ways in which it can be improved.
3. Project Objective : Our project is to present an alternative way to help solve the traffic
problems in the city of Bangkok. Presently, the traffic is very bad due to the fact that theyre so
many cars within the city and not enough traffic lanes to support them. This is what our proposal
intends to solve. What we propose is to transform Bangkoks entire road system into a magnetic
road. This way, we will be able to have cars on top and below the actual road. Magnetic
repulsion is the key attribute in this project.

1. Proposal
Currently, Bangkok is considered to be one of the cities with the worst traffic in the world
due to lack of management in road system. Small or slight changes in the road structure could
result in varying traffic conditions on the road. The current production of harmful gases from
massive number of vehicles on the road also majorly increase pollution. To solve this, the cars
functioning can also be changed in a way that harmful production of gases are stopped and the
road structure can be changed in a way that traffic disappears. Therefore, we came up with a
new types of road system, in which the road resembles a tube-like structure and is hollow
inside. Made up of magnet, the road can adhere the electro-magnetic car in many
directions, allowing for more traffic within a single road. With the use of magnetic control over
the traffic, there will be no use of fuel for cars and therefore, less air pollution. This solution is
actually extremely cost effective, even though it may sound like a lot at first, but the benefits the
city wouldve gained outweighs the cost here. That is, not having to pay for fuel for the cars and
the damage on environments caused by air pollution. If the conventional roads were used, as
time passes, small effects from each action get accumulated to form one big problem, which we
have to deal using large amount of money. Therefore, the new designed road is more cost
effective and more useful. Our project is to present an alternative way to help solve the traffic
problems in the city of Bangkok.
Magnetic
repulsion is the key attribute. Eventually, we will try to transform the entire road network of
bangkok into a mag lev road, currently however, we will start with only the Highway network of
Bangkok. We found out that the road in Bangkok is about 207.9 km an estimated cost for tube-
like structure maglev roads would be approximately 4 trillion baht. Project implementation plan:
We intend to start with the a small test road on the highway. This is because we want to see first
how effective the new system will be. Based on the observations on the new road system in
action, we will evaluate the results then try to replace the whole highway network of Bangkok
and turn it into a fast and very expensive tube system. Shuttling people across the width of the
city at speeds twice as fast as a car and emitting half the polution. If that worked out well, itll
pave the way for turning the whole of Bangkoks 5400 km of road into magnetic levitation and
then putting magnetic levitation personal cars out on sale. This can be supported by the
evidence in 1959, Ford displayed the concept car Leva car. It was a one-person, small in a
modern sense, car propelled by maglev. The car was designed to be levitated by magnets, and
was intended to be developed for high-speed transportation systems. The Levicar was very light
and when raised off its guide rail by the magnetic it only required a blower in the back to propel
it. A working model was actually built. While technically a success, the whole project was
dropped due to financial constraints.

Measured quantities:
Highway in bangkok :207.9 km
Normal road: 5400 km (Not used)
Cost per km of road estimated: 178 USD/km
Tube road is approx: 3 times the cost of normal flat road

The cost for highway alone= $ 207.9km*178 million *3*34.55 baht/USD= approx 4 trillion baht

After the above three paragraphs make a:

(2 pts) 2. Division of Duties list:

a) Writing the proposal --- Tommy
b) Acquiring the materials --- Kim
c) The scale drawing --- Kimmy
d) Creating a model for the proposal --- Non

(2 pts) 3. Division of Materials Acquisition To complete this step you will need a materials
list and who will supply each required item.
- Future board : 3
- Milk box
- Hose
- Tape
- Color paper: 3 black (big one), green hard paper
- Glue

(6 Pts) 4. Scale Drawing This should be an initial sketch (on our poster paper A3?) with as
many measurements and details as possible. For your final scale drawing you must make an
accurate and beginning/professional scale drawing of your project. Note this is a SCALE
drawing so include the scale on the drawing, and on your final future board model: Example:
Scale 1:300.
