Course Description:
This course is intended to introduce students to the purpose and nature of business activity. We
will discuss the factors that influence business decisions and behaviors and provide a basic
framework around business development and implementation. This course also provides a look
at the means for integrating business activities as a whole. As change is the only constant, this
course will look at how new enterprises are created in response to economic, cultural and/or
technological changes and how existing businesses must adapt if they are to survive and grow.
Course Objectives:
1. Examine the nature of business activity in terms of what businesses do and what is their
purpose.
2. Identify the role of entrepreneurs and why they are important to the economy.
3. Outline social enterprises and how they benefit society.
4. Recognize the different economic sectors (primary, secondary, tertiary, private and
public).
5. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of legal structures for companies and sole
traders.
6. Identify how to measure the size of a business.
7. Describe the nature and significance of business objectives in the private and public
sectors.
8. Relate the significance of small and family-run businesses to the economy.
9. Define the decision making process and its influences on business objectives.
10. Identify different groups affected by business behavior and the relationship between these
groups.
