INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
You have a friend living abroad and he wishes to know where you live in Mauritius
but unfortunately he cannot find out. You will help him find your location by
preparing and sending him a map highlighting your city, town or village.
Instructions:
The data you require for this map are located in the network folder Exam_GIS.
Prior to starting the exam, copy the whole folder to your C drive.
Complete the exercise and answer the 4 questions on the answer sheet provided.
When completing the map, you will be saving and burning your working folder on
the CD provided. You will have 15 additional minutes after the 2 hours exam to
engrave the CD.
Question 1
Open ArcMap
In ArcCatalog navigate to the folder C:\Exam_GIS and add the below data from the
Geodatabase My_town.gdb
- aerofacp
- builtupa
- coastl
- Districts_Mauritius
- Inwatera
- roadl
- watrcrsl
In the table of content, rearrange the order of display if necessary as follow from top
to bottom:
- aerofacp
- roadl
- watrcrsl
- inwatera
- coastl
- builtupa
- Districts_Mauritius
- tileref

- aerofacp: Airport
- builtupa: Settlements
- coastl: Coastline
- roadl.shp: Roads
- Districts_Mauritius: Districts of Mauritius
- Inwatera: Lakes and Dams

LEAVE THE MAP OPEN AND DO NOT FORGET TO SAVE YOUR WORK

In the Roads Layer Properties, symbolize the roads using Categories / Unique
Values.

Question 3
In the layer Settlements attribute table, you will be looking for the city, town or
village from where you are from.
Select the row for your city, town or village. Close or minimize the attribute table. If
there are more than one value for your village or town, visualize on the map the area
that concerns you only in order to select that one only.
In the Table of content, from the Settlements layer, export the new selection as a
layer (Data/Export Data). Browse to the folder Exam_GIS and save the new layer as
My_town.
Accept when asked to display the exported data as a layer in the map.
From the Table of contents, Rename the new layer My Town (without the _ ).
Choose a bright colour of your choice as symbol and label as follow:
Font: Arial, size 14, Bold, Red
Make sure the label feature is activated and the layer visible on the map.
Question 4
You will be creating the layout of the map before sending to your friend.
Rearrange the map to best fit the page, rezoom and center if necessary.
If the legend appears very small, you will select it and delete it. Then from the top
menu, insert a new legend. On the window that appears, click next to all and finish.
A new legend should appear on the map layout, you can then resize and place it
where it best fits.
Double-click the text element below the scale bar and write in your name and
todays date.

The scale bar should show units in Kilometers, but here the bar might show Decimal
Degrees. If it is not already in Kilometers, double-click the scale bar, you should
then be able to change the unit to kilometers in the window that appears and by
choosing the correct tab.
Your map is finished, Save and finally Export Map to PDF. Save the new PDF in the
Exam_GIS Folder.
Burn the Exam_GIS Folder on the CD given to you and write your name and ID
number on the CD before handing over to the invigilators.
