anexhibitionthatexaminestherecentproliferationofcollageinarchitecturalrepresentationinrelationship
toscenographyandtheatricalsetdesign.Basedonhistoricalreferencessuchasnineteenthcenturytoy
theaters,aswellastwentiethcenturymodelssuchasAldoRossisLittleScientificTheater,andDavid
HockneysstagedesignfortheMagicFlute,thisprojectinvitescontemporarypractitionerstorethinkthe
waysinwhicharchitectureiscreatedinrelationshiptotheatricalityandhowitoscillatesbetweenrealityand
scenographytoanswerquestionsaboutspace,depth,context,faade,andrepresentation.

SuteranddramaturgJorgePalinhosSpaceswithoutdramainvestigatesthesimilaritiesbetweentheatrical
stagesetsandarchitecturalscalemodels,highlightingthewaysthateachconstructedlandscapeanticipates
narrativesandpromptsthepersonaldramaofspeculationandthecreationoffictions.Inbothcases,the
resultingspatialexperienceiscontrolledandpreciselyframedwithafixedrelationbetweenobserverand
objectanarchitecturalimaginarythatismoregraphiccompositionthanspatialcreation,moreimagethan
space.Bysuperimposingfragments,formsandelementswithinagivenstageset,themodelofthetheater
allowstheparticipantstorehearsethelawsofartisticcreationitself.AsAldoRossistatesaboutthetheaterin
AScientificAutobiography:Insideit,nothingcanbeaccidental,yetnothingcanbepermanentlyresolved
either.

LIGA,SpaceforArchitectureisanexperimentalexhibitionorientedplatforminMexicoCitythathas
focuseditseffortsondisplayingemergingandinfluentialLatinAmericanbasedpracticessinceitsfounding
in2011byCarlosBedoya,RuthEstvez,WonneIckx,VictorJaime,andAbelPerles.Followingonthe
GrahamFoundationsmultiyeargrantsupportofLIGAsprogram,Spaceswithoutdramaistheresultofan
invitationbytheGrahamtoLIGAtodevelopanexhibitionfortheFoundationinChicago.Forthis

LIGA,SpaceforArchitecture,isanindependentinitiativefoundedinMexicoCitythatpromotes
contemporaryarchitecturethroughexhibitions,conferences,publications,andevents,withafocusonLatin
America.AsacuratorialplatformLIGAstrivestoexpandthearchitecturaldisciplineasadiscursivepractice,
toexperimentwithexhibitionandpresentationformats,andtoestablishconnectionswithotherdisciplines.
LIGAwascofoundedbyCarlosBedoya,RuthEstvez,WonneIckx,VictorJaime,andAbelPerlesin2011.
IsabelMartnezAbascaljoinedLIGAasprogramdirectorinin2015.

RuthEstvez(b.1977.Bilbao,Spain)isawriter,curatorandsetdesignerbasedinLosAngeles,whereshe
iscurrentlythedirectorandcuratorofREDCAT/CalArtsGallery.Between2007and2011,Estvezservedas
thechiefcuratorattheMuseodeArteCarrilloGil,MexicoCity,wheresheorganizedexhibitionsofMark
Manders,FernandoOrtega,GuyBenNer,amongothers.In2010EstvezcofoundedLIGA,Spacefor
ArchitectureinMexicoCity,anexhibitionplatformdedicatedtoexperimentationinthefieldofarchitecture
andurbanism.HercurrentworkatREDCAThasbroughttoLosAngelesartistslikeJavierTllez,Pablo
Bronstein,Allora&Calzadilla,PedroBarateiro,andQuinnLatimer,aswellassuchgroupexhibitions
asAgency.Assembly:BeforeandAftertheSplitsecondrecorded(2015)andSmallMuseumfortheAmerican
Metaphor(2014)cocuratedwithKerstenGeers.Shehaswrittenfornumerousexhibitioncataloguesandart
publicationsandhasindependentlyorganizedexhibitionsinSpain,France,Belgium,andtheUnitedStates,
aswellasinMexico.

WonneIckxfoundedPRODUCTORAinMexicoCity,togetherwithAbelPerles,CarlosBedoya,andVictor
Jaimein2006.PRODUCTORAwasawardedtheArchitecturalLeaguePrizein2007andtheEmerging
VoicesCompetitionin2013.In2016thestudioreceivedtheMiesCrownHallAmericasPrizeforEmerging
ArchitectsfromtheIllinoisInstituteofTechnology(IIT)CollegeofArchitecture.Amongtheofficesmany
publications,themonographspublishedbyArquinein2010and2Gin2014summarizetheworkoverthis
intenseperiodofproduction.IckxteachesatseveraluniversitiesinMexicoCity,aswellastheUniversityof
CaliforniaLosAngeles(UCLA),IIT,andHarvard.HeisoneofthefoundingdirectorsofLIGA,Spacefor
