problem rsthand,andwefeelitdoesnotbene tthehealthofourwaterways,thepeoplethatenjoy
them,ortheanimalsthatliveinthem.Oftentimesboatershaveahardtimebeingresponsiblewith
trashduetowantingtokeeptheirboatcleananddistancestothenearesttrash/recyclingbinsbeing
veryfar.Trashandwaterpollutionalsoa ectsournatural sh,waterfowl,birdsofpreyandother
importantspeciesandecosystem,andwhatweareproposingisasolutiontothisissue.

ProjectBackground:
AccordingtoH umanSociety,thereareseveralstatisticsthathighlightthelethaldangers
posedtothe250milliontonsoftrashdiscardedbyAmericanseachyear.T heGreatPaci cGarbage
Patch,ahugeconglomerationofplasticandothernonbiodegradable otsamswirlingo the
Californiacoast,isestimatedatanywherefromtwiceasbigasTexastolargerthantheU.S.W atercan
bealargeattractanttoourstateandtownascleanwaterwayswillnotonlyboosttourismbutwill
helpwithactivitiesonthewaterway.Anargumentthatcomesupisthatrecreationalactivitiesareto
blameforthelatter,butthisisnotcompletelyaccurate.AccordingtoC oastal.ca,8 0%oftheitems
foundintheoceansandwaterareduetoland-basedsourcesfrompedestrians,motorists,tourists,etc.
Ofcourse,S avetheWavesc antcleanupallthelitterorcompletelysolvethisproblem,however,we
canmakeadi erencelocally,startingwithLakeBerryessa.

Makekeepingthelakescleanmoreconvenient

S WewanttoincreasetheamountoftrashcansbothontheshoreandaddtrashcansintheLake
itselfforpeopletothrowtrashinsteadofintotheLaketohelpkeepLakeBerryessaclean.

M Inthepastyearstherehasntbeenmuchgarbagegatheredfromthelake,Wewouldliketoat
leasthelppickup50%-75%ofthegarbage.

ProjectApproachSummary:
Justlikeglobalwarmingandworldpeace,pollutionissomethingthatwillneverbe
completelysolved.Itisaproblemthatmanyorganizationsandgroupstackleonsimplywiththe
hopesofmakingourcommunitiescleaner.AccordingtoW aterBene tsHealth,w aterqualityreports
indicatethat45%ofU.S.streams,47%oflakes,and32%ofbaysarepolluted.40%ofourriversare
toopollutedforrecreationalactivityandtheLakesareworsewith46%toopollutedforrecreational
activity.

InSavetheWaves,wearewellawarethatwearenotgoingtosolvethecompleteproblem
withwaterpollution,butwecande nitelymakeadi erence.Ourapproachistotacklethisissue
headonjustastherest.Wehavesplitintorolesandhalfofusarefocusonthetechnicalitiesofthe
binitselfwhiletheotherhalfisfocusedonthelogisticsofmarketingandreachingouttopublic
resourcesforhelpintheinstallationportionoftheproject.Wewanttoinstaladockinanareaofthe
lakethatdoesntgetinthewayoftherecreationalusebutalsocanbeseensothatratherthan
throwingtrashinthewater,youcanthrowitoutatthetrashdoc.Weplanonstartingoutwithtwo
cansthatwillbebigroundbinswithunderwaterreceptacles.

Asyoucanseeifthisprojectdoesgointolaunchwewillbecleaningthetrashinthelakeand
minimizethe47%ofpollutedlakes.Wehaveourplansandprototypelaidoutandourideafrom
ECOMPisfeasibleandwehavesolutionstoourissues,liketheissuesofpeoplenotbeingmanaged
andtheissueofthetrashtippingover.Thisgoalisveryrealisticandhasareasonableduedate.
