Well start this tutorial by adding the landscape, model and deer, then blending
them together using adjustment layers, masking and brush. After that well
create some abstract effects for the model using Illustrator and stock images.
Finally well use several adjustment layers to finish this tutorial. Youll need
Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS or newer to follow the process.

Step 1
Step 2
Open the landscape image. Use the Move Tool (V) to drag it into our white
canvas and use the Free Transform Tool (Cmd/Ctrl+T) to resize it as shown
below:
Step 3
Open the paper texture pack. Choose the one you like and place it over the
landscape, change the mode to Soft Light 100%:
Step 4
I used some adjustment layers to change the contrast and mood of the whole
image. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation:
I used Curves (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8O347fHGkjQ) to darken the
scene:
Step 5
Place the woman image in the middle of the canvas and remove the background
using a layer mask:
Step 6
I used an adjustment layer with Clipping Mask to reduce the model saturation:
Step 7
I used Curves to darken the model and on its layer mask, used a soft black brush
to remove the dark on the brighter part of her:
Step 8
Place the deer behind the model and remove the background part using a layer
mask, also set this layer under the model one:
Duplicate this layer and move it to the right, use a soft black brush (on its layer
mask )to erase the left part of him:
Step 9
Make a Color Fill layer (Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color) with Clipping Mask
for the duplicated deer layer with white:
On this layer mask use a hard black brush to reveal some parts of the horn:
Step 10
Make the deer layers selected then press Cmd/Ctrl+G to create a group for
them. Change the group mode from Pass Through to Normal 100%. Create a
Hue/Saturation adjustment layer within this group for the deer layers:
I used Color Balance to match the deer colors with the rest:
Step 11
Its time for Illustrator. Open it up and create a new document with the settings
below:
Use the Ellipse Tool (L) to draw a circle with the color #716E72 (remember to
make the fill color to None), set the stroke to 8 pt:
Hold down the Alt key and drag this layer up to duplicate it. Use the Free
Transform Tool (E) to scale it down a little and place it in the middle. Change the
stroke color to a darker one (I chose #3E3D3F):
Duplicate the first circle and resize it to be smaller, put it inside the previous
ones:
Draw a circle with the fill set to black and stroke to None and place it in the
center of the previous circles
Select all the layers, go to Object > Blend > Blend Options:
Go to Blend again, choose Make (Alt/Option+Ctrl/Cmd +B) and you should have
Press F5 to open the brush panel and click the brush panel options, choose
Open Brush Library > Artistic > Artistic_Ink, choose Dry Ink 2:
Save it as an EPS file for the future use.
Step 12
Come back to Photoshop. Browse the circle file and rasterize it with the settings
below:
Drag this circle into our main document, place it under the deer group.
Add a mask to this layer. Take a splatter brush (I chose the number 187) and
press F5 to change this brush settings:
Use this brush to erase the circle stroke to get a grunge effect:
Duplicate this layer and place it above the deer group. Move it onto the deer
head and use a layer mask with the same brush to get a similar result below:
Step 13
Open the forest image. Use the Retangular Marquee Tool (M) to choose a forest
part and place it behind the model. Set this layer under the model layer and
above the deer group:
Change this layer mode to Soft Light 100% and use the same splatter brush to
Take another forest part and place it above the model layer, change the mode to
Overlay 100%:
Add a mask to this layer and use the same splatter brush to clear the edges and
unwanted parts, leave the effect visible on the model:
Step 14
Place the render beside the model shoulder and blend it with the model using a
layer mask:
Step 15
Open the flower 1 image. Drag it onto the model shoulder using the Move Tool
and change the mode to Overlay 100%:
Use a layer mask and erase the parts outside the shoulder:
Duplicate this layer twice and move them to a lower position (on the arm) and
onto the dark side of the face, erase the unwanted pars using a soft black brush:
Step 16
Group all the flower layers and change the mode to Overlay 100%. Use
Hue/Saturation to desaturate the flower effect:
I used Curves to darken the effect and on its layer mask used a soft black brush
to erase the part on the shoulder:
Step 17
Step 18
I used several adjustment layers to match the flower color with the rest.
Hue/Saturation:
Color Balance:
Curves:
Step 19
Make a new layer on the top. Use the Elliptical Marquee Tool to draw a circle and
then stroke it with the color #323031:
Add a mask to this layer and blur, break the circle stroke as shown below:
Step 20
Use the Line Tool (U) with white color to draw several lines around the model.
Make a group for the line layers. Add a mask to this group and use a soft black
brush to blur and break the lines:
Make a group for the line layers. Add a mask to this group and use a soft black
brush to blur and break the lines:
Step 21
Make a new layer on the top, use the Pen Tool with Shape option, the color
#cdcdcd to draw a shape under a line:
Add a mask to this layer and reduce the opacity of the side with a soft black
brush:
Duplicate this layer and place it at the another side, transform it using
Cmd/Ctrl+T:
Step 22
On a new layer, use a hard white brush to spot on the intersection of the lines:
Step 23
Open the circular design pack. Rasterize the sets as done in the step 12. I chose
one from the sets 1 and placed it at the right side:
I used Color Balance and Hue/Saturation to change its color:
Add another circle to another side of the model and use Hue/Saturation for it:
Step 24
Continue adding more the circles and match their color with the background
using adjustment layers:
Step 25
I added one circle to the one of the model arms and blur its opacity using a layer
mask:
Use Hue/Saturation for this layer:
Step 26
I used three circle designs to add to the head, shoulder and arm and changed
their mode to Overlay 100%. Add a layer mask to each layer and erase the
unwanted details:
Come back to Illustrator. Create a new document and use the Pen Tool to draw a
random shape with black color, the troke 1 pt as shown below:
Step 28
Open this file in Photoshop and rasterize it. Place this shape under one circle,
also set this layer under the model one:
Step 29
Time for Illustrator again. Create a new document and draw two shapes as
shown below (you can draw the first then duplicate it, transform):
Step 30
Open this wireframe in Photoshop and rasterize it. Place it over the model head
and change the mode to Overlay 100%:
Make a new layer on the top. Use the splatter brushes with the color #2f2f33 to
paint on the flower on the head then use a soft black brush on its layer mask to
blend it with the flower:
Continue using these brushes with the same color to add to the flower and the
model arm. I changed the brush layer mode on the arm to Overlay 100%:
Step 32
Make several layers on the top and change the brush color to #413338. Paint
them on and around the model, deer, circles. I changed the brush layers mode
on the face and shoulder to Overlay 100%:
Step 33
We finished adding the elements, now its time to change the color and mood.
Create a Gradient Map adjustment layer on the top:
Change this layer mode to Soft Light 100%:
Step 34
