SRP CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN

FORM OF CONSTRUCTION

The SCHOTTEL Rudderpropeller type SRP 170 designed in the form of a Z-drive is
available in different versions:

- Well-mounted type with/without nozzle

- Transom-mounted type
- Navigator type with/without nozzle (optionally: depth adjustment and swing-out
arrangement hydraulically operated)
- Retractable solution with/without nozzle (Z-version and alt. L-version)

DESIGN

The SCHOTTEL Rudderpropeller type SRP 170 Z-version is consisting of the following
three main assemblies:

- Upper gearing with power and steering gear

- Intermediate section
- Lower gear with propeller and compensating fin (optionally: nozzle equipment)

Upper gearing

Housing: The housing is made of spheroidal graphite iron (GGG) of suitable quality and
pressure-tested and contains the bevel gear transmission for power and the gear
transmission for steering. It is topped by an expansion tank.

Gear wheels: The cyclo-palloid-type gear wheel/pinion are case-hardened and fine
machined after hardening.

Shafts: Input shafts are controlled by a back-stop device. It prevents trailing of the
propeller in the opposite direction.

Bearings: Bearings are all bearings of appropriate type.

Sealings: Shafts are sealed by lip-seals. Other parts are sealed by O-rings. Running
sleeves for lip-seals are ceramic-coated.

Intermediate section

Support tube: The stem section is supported by a tube-shaped housing which is the
relevant part of construction for the hull's framing.

Steering pipe: The steering pipe is the vertical connection between the steering gear
and the lower gear housing.

Power transmission shaft: Connection between the upper and lower gear's power
transmission is achieved by a vertical transmission pipe shaft, running inside the
steering pipe.

Lower gear

Housing: The lower gear box is manufactured from high quality cast iron GGG 40 and
contains the lower bevel gear. The lower gear is formed to give minimum resistance and
to achieve optimum propeller performance, the design of the lower gear housing
incorporates SCHOTTEL's decades of knowhow.

Gear wheels: The pinion and wheel are of cyclo-palloid type. They are case-hardened
and fine machined after hardening. They are designed for max. continuous load under
consideration of additional safety factors and classification requirements.

Propeller shaft: All power-transmitting parts are manufactured from approved materials
accepted by the Classification Societies for transmitting the specified power.

Bearings: All bearings in the lower gear are of the roller type.

Sealings: The propeller shaft seal (triple) is of type Lip seal. The running sleeve is of
high-quality stainless steel material with ceramic coating. Non-rotating parts are sealed
by O-rings. The sealing arrangement is of a proven type.

Propeller: The propeller is of type Kaplan or Wageningen B-series, four or five-bladed,

depending on the results of the torsional vibration analysis. Standard propeller material
is CuAlNi.

Nozzle (optionally): The nozzle is of modified Kort design, type 19A. It is made of mild
steel (shipbuilding steel grade A), with stainless steel plating in the inner surface. Zinc
anodes in suitable size and quantity are welded to the outerplating. The nozzle is
dismountable.

DESIGN DETAILS

Steering system

The lower gearing with propeller and nozzle (optionally) can be infinitely moved towards
port or starboard by means of one hydraulic motor of type worm gear. The propeller
thrust can be directed endlessly through 360 around the vertical axis, as a result an
optimum combination of propulsion and steering is attained.

Lubrication

The SRP 170 is lubricated by means of a combined splash/spray oil system.

The lower gearing and the steering worm gear are designed basing submersion
lubrication. The lubricating oil for the power transmission is forced through the oil
circulating worm into the lower gearing and rises through the hole in the power
transmission shaft into the lubricating oil tank.
The lubricating oil is cooled in the lower section by the water surrounding the SRP.
The oil header tank including oil lever gage and warning device is mounted on top of the
upper gear box.

SPECIAL DESIGN

Retractable unit

The SRP 170 is available as retractable Rudderpropeller in Z- and in L-version.

For the retraction one hydraulic cylinder and corresponding guide bars are arranged.
The L-version (SRP 170 LSV) is designed in such a way that the drive motor can be
arranged on top of unit.
The Z-version (SRP 170 ZSV) is designed in order to arrange the drive motor
horizontally, the power transmission between Rudderpropeller and the drive motor
automatically-controlled an electro-hydraulic disengaging split clutch is foreseen. This
clutch is mounted on the top plate of the well, it automatically releases the SRP for
mentioned power transmission when the unit shall be retracted.

The steering is actuated by a joy-stick-switch, which is automatically centred by a spring.

The switch transmits the electric steering impulses (port and starboard) via an electronic
circuit system, a hydraulic solenoid valve and hydraulic motor fitted out with a reduction
gear to the SRP.

The steering motion is stopped when centring the joy-stick.

The thrust direction or rudder position is transmitted electrically to the indicator unit in the
steering panel. The transmitter is mechanically connected to the SRP.

A rudder position sender "Copilot 2000" gives the electric impulse to an electronic circuit
system, solenoid valve and hydraulic motor fitted out with a reduction gear to the SRP.

The thrust direction or rudder position is transmitted electrically to the indicator unit
mounted in the steering column. The transmitter is driven mechanically from the SRP. The
hand-wheel of the Copilot is turned horizontally and sets the rudder or thrust angle.

The indicator follows until the set position has been reached.

In case of an electronic break-down or failure, the steering is automatically switched to a

time-dependable system. The vertical lever within the hand-wheel is used for clutch
actuation and speed control of the prime mover.

In case of failure of the main steering system, this is either switched over automatically or
manually (optionally) to a time-dependable steering system.
