Battery Capacity Test

Scope : Sealed Lead Acid Battery Capacity Test

Test purpose : This test will be carried out to determine the actual capability
of the battery as compared to the rated capability

Reference : Applicable Manufacture Standards, Contract

Specification and Construction Drawing

Battery Preparation:
1. Measure and record all cells/units open circuit voltage to assure minimum
acceptable voltage prior to interconnecting.
2. The individual cells/units should be interconnected using the intercell/unit
cables or busbars specified for the application and with which the baterys
performance is rated.
3. Equalize the battery for 24 hours at the recommended voltage to assure the
battery is fully charged.
4. Following equalization, the battery should be placed on float charge at the
recommended voltage for 3 to 7 days prior to acceptance test.
5. Just prior to initiating the acceptance capacity test, measure and record the
individual cell/unit float voltages.

Equipment requirements:
Load bank capable of providing the appropriate discharge current.
Digital voltmeters to monitor full battery discharge voltage.
Amp meter to monitor battery discharge current.
Digital voltmeter to monitor individual cell/unit voltages during the discharge.
Stop watch to monitor time of the discharge.

Test Condition :
Brand : LEADLINE
Manufacturer : Avatec Schwiez AG, Switzerland
Model : EVH 100
Rated Capacity : 100 Ah
Voltage per cell : 2 Volts
Design Life : 15 years in float condition @ 20C
Qty per bank : 60 cells (0BTC10, 0BTC20), 96 cells (0BTG50)

0BTC10 & 0BTC20

Discharge current : 18.1 A
End voltage : 1.8 V/Cell
Time : 5 hours
Temperature : ____ C

0BTG50

Discharge current : 64.6 A

End voltage : 1.8 V/Cell
Time : 1 hour
Temperature : ____ C

Procedure :
1. Assure that the instrumentation is operational and properly connected to the
battery to continuously monitor battery discharge voltage and current.
2. Measure and record the float voltage of each cell/unit and ensure all
cells/units are floating properly.
3. Remove the charging current from the battery.
4. With the load bank OFF, connect it to the battery.
5. Start the timer and turn the Load Bank ON, adjusting and maintaining it for
the appropriate discharge rate.
6. Record the battery discharge voltage and current with battery terminals and
time at the start and end of the test and periodically throughout the test as
many times as practical.
7. Terminate the capacity test when the battery is discharged to the
predetermined system end point voltage (1.8V), a cell or unit is going into
reversal, or a safety hazard is noted.

Requirements : The ampere-hour rating is the product of the number of

amperes of current the battery can supply multiplied by the number of hours
over which the current is supplied to a specified end point voltage. For the
specific current which has been determined during the test, the duration of the
test should be same with the calculation.
