PHOTO 2>3 SUMMER WORK

1
Choose a single subject to explore over the
summer. Find 5 distinct approaches,
perspectives, or ways of seeing this subject to
this subject at least 5 rolls (film or digital -
equal to at least 24 exposures each).

This could be a location, a person, or a group

of people. Try to think of your subject in 5
distinct ways or perspectives, dont just shoot
125 images straight of your subject.

Here are some examples.

366 PROJECT - 2016

Using black and white film and a single

camera I photographed my wife everyday for
all of 2016 exploring her role as a wife, a
mother, a business owner, an artist, and a
friend. Here is a selection from each month
from among the 366 photos (2016 was a leap).

MY NEW DAUGHTER: MAEVE
With my new daughter born I am of course going to take
pictures. Thinking about how to structure those photos into
something more than snapshots something that tells a story
I am considering my 5 different approaches to her:

1. Birth and the hospital

2. The Mother/Daughter relationship and bonding

3. Ezra as a big brother and his relationship to her

4. Her Down Syndrome diagnosis and small heart condition

that will need medical follow up after birth

5. Her experiencing the world for the first time

All the days and nights

He photographs his family for more than twenty

years. The work began in 1984, the year before his
fathers near fatal fall from a commuter train and
his mothers subsequent breakdown and
hospitalizations for depression. A student of Larry
Sultan consider how this work is similar and
different to Sultans Pictures From Home.

Through shooting the hundreds of images this summer with your digital camera or phone - keep us updated through Instagram. Use
the hashtag #RHHSsummer. Follow me on Instagram @cecilrhhs (Ill follow you back)

When loading film watch the leader go all the way around the take up spool, close the back, take up the slack by gently rewinding the film until
there is tension, then advance to frame one the rewind arm should spin as you advance film if loaded correctly. Remember to set the correct
ISO when loading new film. When you are done shooting and the camera wont advance any more press the rewind release button on the
bottom of the camera, make sure it stays in, and rewind the film (turning the rewind arm in the direction of the little arrow on it). If flying keep
your camera and film in your carry-on luggage - checked luggage gets x-rayed at a very high power and will ruin your film. The carry-on x-ray is
fine.
Here are some 170
ideas for subjects:

Here are some ideas for subjects:
a person close to you (friend/family member you spend time with - consider lighting making it dramatic, soft, dreamy, harsh)
your favorite place
a new place that you will visit over the summer
amusement parks (consider the rides, the architecture, movement, the people)
the beach (umbrellas, towels, horizons, toys, people - be careful not to get sand in your camera, it's deadly!)
flower gardens, botanical gardens (Baltimore and D.C. conservatories), parks
summer weather and its affect on the landscape and people (thunderstorms, light, movement, action)
food, picnics, cookouts
recreation (miniature golf, sports, beach, fairs, carnivals)
your favorite place in nature
water: swimming, diving, splashes, reflections in water
personal objects find a large piece of white paper, take it outside, and photograph objects or people in front of it like a studio
portrait.

Here are some ideas for approaches to those subjects:

reflections in water, in mirrors
movement long exposures to create blur, or fast exposures of action
against a blank white or black backdrop
a deep depth of filed amongst a lot of texture in the woods, the grass
your subject being held by a person can work if your photographing objects, a place, or people
your subject under different kinds of light or times of day
different features of your subject or roles your subject play (a persons job, a persons family, a persons home or room, etc.)

THE PHOTO BOOK

The first month of school will be spent

processing the images you shot, making contact
sheets, organizing, editing, and sequencing
them into a book that will be printed in some
way. You can think of your 5 approaches as 5
chapters or the photos can be mixed together.

You used to have to be a chemist to be able to be a
photographer, and now it keeps getting easier and
easier and easier. . . if an eight-year-old can take a
picture, how do I add meaning to that? And, for
myself, there is a move towards storytelling as a way of
connecting these fragments to mean more.
