2017 DYNAMIC PLANET

EVENT TRAINING STRATEGIES

2016 SCIENCE OLYMPIAD SUMMER INSTITUTE
PHOENIX, AZ
BELL WORK ACTIVITY
Remove the top layer from one of the Oreo cookies. Ideally, this will leave the
white creamy center of the cookie over a dark bottom layer.
BELL WORK ACTIVITY
Place the bottom layer covered with the white center on the left side of the
paper plate or blank sheet of paper.

Yes you can eat the biscuit without the creamy white filling

At the top of the plate or paper, write a

title such as Earth Structure or Layers
of the Earth. You can also originate
your own title if you wish.
BELL WORK ACTIVITY
Place a dollop of chocolate syrup in the center of the exposed creamy white
center of the cookie.
BELL WORK ACTIVITY
Place the M&M in the center of the chocolate syrup dollop.
BELL WORK ACTIVITY
Label the four Earth structures represented by the cookie including inner core
(M&M), outer core (chocolate syrup), mantle (white creamy center) and crust
(dark outer layer of cookie).

Inner Core

Outer Core

Mantle

Crust

2017 DYNAMIC PLANET
EVENT OVERVIEW
2017 EVENT OVERVIEW
The 2017 Dynamic Planet Event will focus upon large scale processes affecting
the structure of Earths Crust
2017 EVENT OVERVIEW
The rotation of Dynamic Planet events will change from bi-annual to annual
beginning in 2017. Future rotations include:

Glaciers 2018

Earths Fresh Waters 2019

Oceanography 2020

The Earth/Space Science Event Committee has also discussed the possibility
of other themes that may be added to the Dynamic Planet rotation including
Deserts, The Atmosphere, Soil Chemistry and Extra-Terrestrial Planets
2017 EVENT OVERVIEW
Areas of emphasis for 2017 will include:
Theory of tectonic plate movement
Identification of Earth layers
Types of plates, boundaries and margins
Types of tectonic basins
Driving forces of plate tectonics
Plate movements
Aulacogens and hot spots
Isostatic adjustments
Magmatization
Geologic history of North America
Interpretation of geophysical data
Economic geology and engineering practices
YOU WILL NEED TO:
Switch your event content from Oceanography to Plate Tectonics and
associated topics including volcanoes, Earthquakes, tsunamis, and
geologic history

Realize that the focus of the 2017 Dynamic Planet Event is

much more than volcanoes and Earthquakes

TECTONIC PLATE BOUNDARIES
CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND PLATE TECTONICS
Though Alfred Wegener was the first to suggest the theory of continental drift and
plate tectonics in 1915, it wasnt widely accepted until the 1960s and 1970s.
CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND PLATE TECTONICS
New information obtained about the nature of the ocean floor, Earths magnetism, the
distribution of volcanoes and earthquakes, the flow of heat from Earths interior, and
the worldwide distribution of plant and animal fossils led to a greater acceptance of
Wegener's theory.
CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND PLATE TECTONICS
The theory of plate tectonics states that the Earths lithosphere is broken up into 15
tectonic plates.
CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND PLATE TECTONICS
Seven large plates include:

African
North American

South American

Eurasian

Australian

Antarctic

Pacific
CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND PLATE TECTONICS
Several minor plates also exist. They include:

Arabian

Nazca

Philippine
CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND PLATE TECTONICS
The remaining plates include:

Indian

Cocos

Caribbean

Scotia

Juan DeFuca
CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND PLATE TECTONICS
These plates are all moving in different directions and at different speeds from 2 cm to
10 cm per year in relationship to each other atop the hot plastic upper mantle, known
as the asthenosphere.
CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND PLATE TECTONICS
These plates are in motion as a result of convection in the asthenosphere created by
the compression of molten nickel and iron in Earths core.
CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND PLATE TECTONICS
Plates may converge (collide) at their boundaries
CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND PLATE TECTONICS
Plates may slide past one another in Transform boundaries
CONTINENTAL DRIFT
So what seems to be happening is that radiative forces within Earths core are
causing crustal plates to move into, away, above and below one another.
CONTINENTAL DRIFT
This causes the Earth to shift and in doing so create distorted features on and
beneath its surface

CREATING MODELS OF PLATE BOUNDARIES
CREATING MODELS OF PLATE BOUNDARIES
Divergent Plate Boundaries
Carefully remove the top biscuit of an Oreo cookie
CREATING MODELS OF PLATE BOUNDARIES
Once removed, break the biscuit (the one without the creamy center) in half.
Try to make the two halves equal in size.
CREATING MODELS OF PLATE BOUNDARIES
Set the halves on top of the remaining biscuit (the one with the white creamy
center).
CREATING MODELS OF PLATE BOUNDARIES
Place the model onto the Four-Square Worksheet on the square labeled
Divergent Boundaries

Come up with a nickname that is

descriptive for divergent boundaries in DIVERGENT CONVERGENT
three words or less.

Write a short description of

the model. TRANSFORM HOT SPOTS

CREATING MODELS OF PLATE BOUNDARIES

CONTINENTAL DRIFT THEORY
Observe each of the images that follows and identify evidence supporting- or
refuting Wegeners Theory of Continental drift
2017 DYNAMIC PLANET
SUMMARY
SUMMARY
The 2017 theme for the Dynamic Planet Event will be
Plate Tectonics
Dynamic Planet themes will begin rotating annually
instead of bi-annually

Students should become conversant in plate tectonics

including the location of plates, direction of movement,
forces that generate movement and direction of
movement

Study volcanoes and earthquakes as phenomenon

resulting from tectonic plate movement
