Subject: Features Sources/ Map Layout

Date: 23 February, 2016 Project ID: GISC9315D2

Introduction

This assignment serves as an introduction to the use of Autodesks AutoCAD MAP 3D Feature
Sources/Map Layout. AutoCAD MAP 3D presents several advantages: analysis tools, great
accuracy of the coordinate systems, creation, and edition of symbols, presents a variety of
legends, north arrows, and scale bars. Moreover, through the Map Books, it is possible to create
viewports that help to organize the information according to a grid created from the Map Book.
Thus, this software can be useful for GIS users. Moreover, it can be used to increase productivity,
improve quality, and create a database for easy access.

The purpose of this assignment is to gain a basic practical familiarity with Using Raster Images;
connecting to Features, Styling Images and publish a Map Book.

The deliverable includes the creation of a 3D Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Map Book of
Redding, California. 3D DEM has been created in order to highlight changes in elevations within
the given area.

Methodology

Assign Coordinate system:

It was important to define the coordinate system of the drawing before attaching to data.
Assigning the coordinate system allows for the accurate display of distances and areas on the
map. The study location is the city of Redding, California. Due to the location of the study area,
the coordinate system assigned was NAD27 California State Planes, Zone 1(401) US Foot.
Connecting to Raster Data (Raster DEM Connection):
Through the Connect Tool, the Raster Source REDDING_CA1.dem has been connected to the map
with the mentioned coordinate system. it also allowed to connect Roads.sdf files. The advantage
of connecting to data is that the speed of analyses by displaying in the drawing, and not actually
contained within.

Styling Raster Feature:

Hillshading: To stylize the REDDING_CA1.dem, the view has been set to 3D. Then, hillshade was
selected from Analyze > Feature > Surface > Hillshade. In the Hillshade Setting dialog box,
Direction has been set to 225 and the angle to 35.

Theme and Vertical Exaggeration: An appropriate height based theme palette (USGS DEM
Pellete) has been applied to the raster. In 3D view, 2x vertical exaggeration appeared to be the
most appropriate representation.

The following command has been given to select a theme.

1. Display Manager > select REDDING_CA1.dem> Style Button.

2. Style Editor > Style > select Theme (drop-down list).
3. Select Palette in theme section > USGS DEM Palette (drop-down list)> Ok.

Contour Creation: Following the selection of the appropriate Hillshade, theme and vertical
exaggeration, contours have been created for the DEM in the Generate Contour dialog wizard.
50m intervals were set for the contour lines, and every 4th contour was considered a major
contour, and therefore highlighted in bold and labelled.

In addition, the style of the contours has been edited to meet the required specifications,
specifically the labeling and line styles of the contours. This was achieved by right-clicking the
saved contours layers and choosing the Edit Style option. The labeling was chosen to use the
ElevationIndex attribute which was stated in the terms of reference. Furthermore, the units
were changed from Inches to Feet.

Styling Road Network:

An SDF Data connection was created in order to display the Redding California road network
within the drawing. Roads layer was composed of multiple road types and it appeared identical
to each other. Thus, it was necessary to modify the Roads layers through the Roads Style Editor.
The roads have been stylized to make them stand out from the other features. Two scale range
have been adopted: 0 to 2999 and 3000 to infinity. The styles of the feature have been edited by
clicking the Edit Style option. In order to produce the requirements in terms of reference, some

parameters have been needed to be edited using the specific scale ranges and thematic rules
provided. These parameters included:

Page | 2
1. Making the majors roads visible from a scale of 3000 to infinity. The street types for the
major roads included: Arterial (ART), Highway (HWY), Freeway (FWY) AND Collector
(COL).
2. Labeling and positioning the street names below the scale of 3000 in terms of the map
size. The street types of these street names below the scale of 3000 included: LOCAL,
Private (PVT) ROAD, ART, HWY, FWY AND COL.
3. The omission of the street types labeled UNK or ALLEY from the map display.
Layout:

The final map layout for the 3D view of Redding, California was created within AutoCADs Layout
manager. The layout includes all necessary cartographic elements such as scale bar, north arrow,
legend, and the created contour lines. The road networks that has been draped over top of the
digital elevation model and included in the layout as well.

Creating and publishing a Map Book:

A map book takes a single map and divides it into "tiles" by placing a grid over it. Each square of
the grid becomes a map tile. Each tile is then rendered on a separate page, which can be publish
to an electronic format called DWF. A Map Book in 2D view using the Map Book 8x11 Classic
was created through the New, Map Book which can be found in the Task Pane. Moreover,
some settings parameters were set to create de Map Book. The Tiling Scheme - By Area
parameters were applied, scale factor chosen in the Map Book setting was 3000, 1% for overlap
of each tile, and Columns and Rows was chosen from Name Scheme.

Finally, the Map Book was published and saved as a DWF file format.

Issues:

Major problems have been encountered in using the AutoCAD Map 3D. One is freezing and not
responding during analysis. This impacted on the consistency and loss of work done. Another is
associated with the legend when attempted to be added to the layouts and map book. Solution
of these issues would be to improve the performance of the AutoCAD software in the systems
provided.

Conclusion

The 3D DEM of Redding, California does well to highlight the changes in elevation over the
landscape through the application of a visually pleasing colour palette, as well as an effective
hillshade setting.

Additionally, AutoCAD Map 3D greatly facilitated the creation of a Map Book by automatically
creating the Books grid. However, as with all software, there were several challenges that
needed to be overcome, specifically to improve the creation of a legend.
