ABSTRACT: Central to effective student learning is engagement. This paper presents a student-centred ap-
proach to enhance engagement and, hence, improve learning outcomes in geo-engineering education. The ap-
proach incorporates a variety of facets or tools, which include: demonstration models; videos and documenta-
ries; e-learning; and case studies incorporating geotechnical failures. These aids are particularly effective
when used in combination with the traditional forms of lectures, tutorials, experimental classes and design
projects. The paper includes details of each of these learning tools and the contribution each makes to improv-
ing student engagement and learning.
