StatementfromDeputyMinisterKimHenderson

VICTORIAInresponsetorecommendationoftheOfficeoftheOmbudsperson,theDeputy
MinistertothePremierandheadoftheB.C.PublicService,KimHenderson,issuedthe
followingpublicstatementtoday:

OnApril6,2017,onbehalfoftheBCPublicService,Iofferedanunqualifiedand
comprehensiveapologytoallwhowereadverselyaffectedbypublicserviceconductinthe
processesdetailedintheOmbudspersonsreport.Atthistime,Iwouldliketoexpanduponthat
apologyandconfirmthattheB.C.publicserviceistakingimportantstepstoaddressall
recommendations.

TheOmbudspersonandhisteamdeliveredathoroughreportdetailingfailingsofmultiple
departmentsforwhichthepublicservicemustbeaccountable.

OnbehalfoftheBCpublicservice,Iacknowledgeandapologisefortheharmcausedbythe
investigationandthedecisionsthatresulted,includingtheemployeesuspensions,employee
disciplineandterminations,contractsuspensionsandterminations,andunwarranteddata
suspensions.

Theremaybenowaytofullyrepairthedamagethatwasdone,asheadofthepublicserviceI
takeresponsibilitytoensuregovernmentestablishesandcarriesoutaplantoaddressthe
recommendations,tohelpensureeventslikethesedonothappenagain.

ThegovernmenthasengagedtheHon.ThomasCromwell,formerSupremeCourtofCanada
Justice,toadministerareparationprocessforthoseadverselyaffectedbythematters
recountedintheOmbudspersonsreport,andfinaltermsofreferenceforMr.Cromwellhave
beenagreedandpostedonline.GovernmentwillprovideongoingupdatestoMr.Cromwell
abouttheactiontakenontherecommendations.Thesereportswillbepubliclyavailableonthe
governmentwebsite.

Ourstandardsofconductexpectthatweactwithintegritytoinstillconfidenceandtrustand
treatpeoplewithrespectanddignity.Wefellshortofthatstandard,andthroughtheactions
andchangeswewilltakeinresponsetothisreportwewillstrivetorepairthatdamageand
rebuildthepublicsconfidenceandtrust.
