DESCRIPTION:
This year-long course is designed to introduce students to theories of teaching and learning, and to
prepare students for entry into university programs and careers in Education or related fields. Public
speaking, problem solving, analytical reading, expository writing, and critical thinking skills are
embedded throughout the course. The course also offers students opportunities to explore and
research career options in teaching and other school site educational careers. Integration of theory
and practice is enhanced by required internships at various K-12 school sites under the supervision of
a mentor teacher. This course meets the University of California Elective g requirement. This
course is articulated with Cuyamaca Community College/Grossmont Community College.
Prerequisite: Developmental Psychology of Children

BASIC SKILLS:
As part of the instruction, this course reinforces and applies basic skills in reading, writing, speaking,
listening and mathematics in the context of a career. Instructional strategies used in this course also
assist students to: think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and develop the ability to learn and
reason. Students are given opportunities to demonstrate personal qualities including individual
responsibility, self-confidence, self-management and teamwork.

TEACHING CAREERS - The Student
Describes the roles and responsibilities of teachers and instructional assistants as faculty members (in
elementary, middle, and secondary schools), evaluators, counselors, diplomats, disciplinarians, and learners.
Describes the ethical and legal roles and responsibilities of teachers in regard to confidentiality, child abuse
reporting, California Education Code and Title V Regulations
Describes the characteristics of an effective school
Explains issues of accountability in schools i.e. Academic Performance Index (API), Adequate Yearly
Progress (AYP), High School Exit Exam (HSEE), No Child Left Behind
Defines curriculum, instruction and assessment

PERSONAL AND OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY - The Student


Demonstrates procedures to be followed in the case of emergencies

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS - The Student


Identifies the growth and development characteristics of children in middle childhood and adolescence in
social, emotional, physical, and intellectual areas.

CHILD GUIDANCE AND CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT - The Student


Describes and demonstrates guidance techniques appropriate to the stages of development

PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING AND TEACHING - The Student


Uses State Content Standards as a starting point for planning.
