The traditional music of the Philippines


like the folk music of other countries,
reflects the life of common, mostly rural Filipino.
Like its counterparts in Asia, a lot of traditional
songs from the Philippines have a strong
connection with nature.

different types of Filipino traditional music


1. kundiman
the word kundiman is believed to have
been taken from the phrase kung hindi man
which means I thought im not. It is a poetic
song of love and heart break that expresses
not only melancholic emoticons but also intense
commitment to love.

2. kumintang
another musical style related to the kundiman is kumintang. this is a popular
wedding song in batangas and bulacan and also loves considered a tagalong
chant about love and courtship.

3. Balitaw
it is a folk music that is popular in Visayan Region. The balitaw is an
extemporaneous witty exchange of verse between a man and woman.

4. Pasyon

performed during Holy week, refers to the narrative verse of life, passion,
suffering and resurrection of Jesus Christ . It is sung by chanting, the verse in
traditional tunes.

(January 29,1889-September 28, 1947)
Born in Sta. Maria Bulacan
among his greatest kundiman works include
sakali man and Hibik ng Filipinas(1917) pakiusap(1921)
ano kaya ang kapalaran? (1938) and Dalit ng pag-ibig, he supervised
kundiman Leron Leron Sinta Madaling araw, and Manilena.
he was posthumously given the patnubay
ng sining at kalinangan award in 1968
and was named AMA NG KUNDIMAN

2. Nicanor Abellardo
February 7, 1893- March 21, 1934)
One of the Philippines Pro Found Musicians.
He is considered as a Filipino Genius in the field
of music. his contribution and compositions shaped Filipino
music. abelardo was born with music in his genes his
parents were both musically inclined and hailed from bulacan.
in his lifetime, abelardo wrote more than 140 compositions and
among them were the well-loved art songs-kundiman
like nasaan ka Irog?(1932) kundiman ng Luha (1924)
, Magbalik ka Hirang (1925) Mutya ng Pasig (1926) and
Himutok (1928). He also wrote music for Sarswela
like kawanggawa dakilang punglo and ang
Tala ng unibersidad, aside from art songs and
sarswelas, abelardo also composed sacred works
like mountain suite and sarswelas, Abelardo
