Details:
Course:
Mathematics
Unit Title:
Geometric shapes - Square
Grade Level:
48 60 Months
Time:
45 minutes
Content:
Learning Outcomes [ASSURE (State Objectives)]:
Cognitive Development:

Children who are 48 60 months of age (Audience) knows the features of the shape of square (behavior)
among the different geometric shapes (condition) with 95 percent (degree)

Children who are 48 60 months of age (Audience) compares the shape of square (behavior) with
different shapes (condition) with 90 percent (degree)

Instructional Materials & Media [ASSURE (Select Strategies, Technology, Media and Materials)]:
Square stickers, papers, Video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQG-1QuIH4g and
medial tool which is Animoto. Link: https://animoto.com/play/3GNFcmMdOLWxTDtGgHj1ag
Learning-Teaching Methods [ASSURE (Select Strategies, Technology, Media and Materials)]:
Video Sharing, Communicating, Questioning, Discussing
Teaching Activities [ASSURE (Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials and Require Learner
Participation)]:
Teacher starts to activity by opening a video on the Internet about the shape of square. (The link of the
video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQG-1QuIH4g) After watching the video, teacher talks with
children the features of the square by using a puppet of square shape. She begins the conversation like:
Hello, I am a geometric shape. Do you know my name? (It is expected to say You are square.
from children by using their video experience in the beginning of the activity.) Yes, I am the square. You
watched me from my video on the Internet. However, I want to talk with you myself. What did you
learned about me except from my name? (Teacher waits answers from children.) I have 4 sides and 4
corners. You can always count my features to recognize me. Now, lets count all together. (Children will
count the sides and corners of the puppet together.) Also, I want to say you that my 4 sides are always in
the same length. If you see a geometric shape which have 4 sides and 4 corners, you should measure its
sides length to understand whether they are equal or not. If they are not equal you cannot say it is a
square. Now, I should go. See you.
After teacher send the puppet. S/he gives square stickers and papers to children and children creates a
picture by using their stickers. In this way, they will be more familiarize with the shape. At the end of the
activity teacher opens video which s/he prepared before the activity by using animoto about 3 geometric
shapes which are circle, triangle and square which is learned in last 3 weeks to uncover all of them with
this video.
Individual Learning Activities: Creating a picture by using square
stickers is an individual work for
children. They will experience the
shape by creating a picture from
square stickers. In this way, they will
have an individual and hands on
experience with this shape.

Group Learning Activities: Group learning activities are watching

the video and talking with puppet
parts. Children will attend and learn
in these activities all together. In this
way, they will have a chance to share
their ideas and discuss about the
shape.
Summary:
This lesson aims to gain knowledge to children about the characteristics of the shape which is square.
After the lesson, children recognize the shape of square and know its features. It is a mathematics
activity and teacher uses some media tools such as video on YouTube in the beginning of the activity and
at the end of the activity another video which is prepared with Animoto.
Measurement & Evaluation:
Teacher assess childrens knowledge with communicating method during puppet part. She asks questions
to children about the shape to evaluate their learning.
Measurement & Assessment Activities for Individual Teacher can give a worksheet which
Performance: includes the shape of square and
rectangular. Children will differentiate the
square ones from rectangular ones by using
their knowledge about the shape. In
addition, children use non-standard tools to
measure the length of the shape such as
pencils, crayons or their fingers.
Measurement & Assessment Activities for Group Children will create a shape of square all
Performance: together by using materials in the
classroom. Children measure the 4 sides
lengths of the shape with non-standard tools
and discuss and work on it all together.
Explanation:
Teacher expects from children to broaden their perspectives about these 3 geometrical shapes which are
circle, triangle and square. S/he knows that there should be more time and ongoing process for the most
effective learning. Therefore, teacher uses additional activities and sources for reinforcing the shapes in
time.
After the unit, an email including the link of survey

oHmV81A/viewform sent to parents. They are asked to answer questions of the online survey with their
children to assess their overall knowledge about these shapes.
Explanation regarding to the implementation of the plan:
In the beginning of the activity, if there will be an Internet loss, teacher should be familiarize with the
video and present it to children by herself. In addition, she uses some square shapes from the classroom
to show children the real shape and let them to examine it.
