1. With what signs/symptoms did your child present?
The child has been vomiting for a few days, the child has had diarrhea and bloody
stools along with stomach pains and no appetite. (patient 1 document)

3. Based on the results of your tests, what diagnosis did you give to your baby?
What difficulties did you have with the diagnosis? What caused those difficulties?
Our baby has been diagnosed with E.coli, we immediately recognized the symptoms
and knew it had to do with the digestive system and the information regarding thee
petting zoo helped us come to our conclusion.
4. What is the treatment plan for your babys illness?
The infant will recover on its own within 5-10 days but if I doesnt heal on its own it
may have to be hospitalized.
a. Why are antibiotics used or not used in your treatment?
Antibiotics are not used because they triple your chances of getting hemolytic
uremic syndrome which can lead to kidney failure and some strains are antibiotic

b. Whats the babys prognosis after treatment?
The baby's prognosis is higher after treatment because they are cured of the e.coli
disease and can get back to a normal life.
c. What is the containment plan to keep your baby from spreading the illness?
Include in your answer information about the incubation period of the illness and
how long the baby is contagious.
The baby will stay at home for the next 5-10 days to get a lot of rest and drink a lot
of water. The baby will not be given any antibiotics and will have to get over the
disease on its own. Most strains are not contagious but if the babies is then we will

5. What type of pathogen is causing the illness (Virus, Bacteria, Protist, Fungus)
The type of pathogen causing this illness is a bacteria. (wikipedia.com)
a. Is there a vaccine for this illness?
Currently there is no vaccine for E.Coli. (techlinkcenter.org)
b. At what age can your baby receive the vaccine?
Since there is no certified vaccine, our baby cannot receive one.
c. Since they have the illness, do they even need a vaccine to prevent future
illnesses from this same pathogen? Explain why or why not. There is no vaccine for
E.coli so they may get the disease again, hopefully the memory T Cells will
remember the pathogen and be able to fight it off it it ever infects the child again.
