178Foreword
Modern typography is based primarily on the theories
and principlos of design evolved in the 20's and 20's of,
ur contury. It was Mallarmé and Rimbaud in the
18th century and Apollinaire in the early 20th century
whe paved the way to a new understanding of the
possibilities inherent in typography and who, released
Irom conventional prejucices anc fetters, createc
through their experiments the basis for the pioneer
achiovoments of the theoreticians and practitioners that
followed. Walter Dexel, El Lissitzky, Kurt Schwitters,
Jan Tschichold, Paul Renner, Moholy-Nagy, Joost
Schmidt eto. breathed new life into an unduly rigid
typography. In his book "Die nous Typografio" (1928)
4J. Tschichold formulated the rules of an up-to-date
and objective typography which met the needs of ine
age.
We are indebted to the exponents of objective and
functional typography and graphic design for the
development of regulative systems in visual communi=
cation. As long aga as the twenties works concaived in
‘objective terms anc composed in accordance with
strict principles were being produced in the fields of
typography, graphic design and photography in
Germany, Holland, Russia, Czachoslovakia and Switzer
land.
The grid as a controlling principle in the form we know
it today etil romained to bo invontod. Vor the first stops
were already being taken towards it in the course of
etorts to achieve the greatest possible order ana
‘economy in the use of typographic resources. The
principle of the grid systom prosentod in this book was
develoged and used in Switzerland after World War I
‘The second half of ihe forties brought the (rst examples,
of printed matter designed with the aid of a grid. This
now trend was characterized by a disposition of text
4nd illustrations conceived on strict principles, by
uniformity in the layout of all pages, and by an objective
attitude in the presentation of the subject.
The author's “The Graphic Arlist and his Design
Problems", published in 1961, was ihe ‘ist book toga
a brief account in words and pictures of the grid system.
