Thesis Statement

The negative mental effect of perceived and experienced racial discrimination affects with Asian

American college students, and the strong ethnic identity and family support can help individuals

copes with racial discrimination.

Detailed Outline

I. Introduction
A. Racial discrimination is a differential treatment based on race that disadvantage a

racial group, and it leads different psychological problem in these group of students.

(Chen 1).
1. The study provides evidence that Asian American college students

experience discrimination across a variety of academic settings.


2. The results of racial discrimination either in the real environment or

perceived from students own will carry mental issues on their

college life.
a. For example, psychological distress, suicidal ideation, state

and trait anxiety and clinical depression. (Hwang 23).


3. It important to realize the consequences of racial discrimination

which leads the negative health outcomes on students college life.


B. Thesis: The experienced and perceived racial discrimination leads the negative

mental issues towards Asian American students in college students, and it is

important to understanding the heavy price of mental issues from such behavior.
II. The experienced and real discrimination which negatively works on Asian American

students mental status.

A. Perceived racial discrimination in Asian American student which is good reliability

and validity (Chen 3).


1. There were some situations, which indicates the how the perceived

discrimination works in Asian American Students people act as if

they are better than I am, I am being called insulted and people

assumed my English is poor (Chen 3).


2. What the Asian American Students thinks about will give them

higher possibility to take more pressure, and damagingly the inner

health.
B. In the college environment, experienced racial discrimination exists in different

ways.
1. Student of color also find the silence of their communities in main

stream curricula (Systemic racism in high education 4).


2. In the classrooms, they are many racial problems in the college

students because the unfair of treatment during the class activity and

interactions with other people (Happer1).


III. Understanding of Asian American students who has racial discrimination experience which

is also connected with mental health. (Hwang 23).


A. Psychological distress is one of the mental issue which comes from the racial

discrimination. The studies indicated that higher discrimination scores were

suggestively linked with psychological distress (Hwang 21).


B. Suicidal Ideation is another unhealthy mental performance results in the racial

discrimination. The results show that the higher discriminations were significantly

related with higher suicidal ideation (Hwang 21).


C. State and Trait Anxiety is highly related with the racial discrimination. The

experiment indicates Higher discrimination was obviously associated with state and

anxiety again. (Hwang 21)

D. For Asian American student, beginning college and graduate students tend to be

vulnerable to discrimination. In This case, they also get more possibility than other

type of students to get the mental issues during their college time (Chen 6).
IV. Discrimination have the harmful effects on the psychological well-beings among the

different minority groups like Asian American Students. (Narra 2).


A. Communicating through the race by adults and peers in school is important in

socializing, which can contribute opposite outcomes when the people devaluing or

disrespectful of their racial background. (Narra 2).


1. Few study has already shown that the effects of racial discrimination

in the school setting on the mental health among Asian Americans.


2. Studies suggests that discrimination experience in the school

environment, with some subgroups and adults and there is more

discrimination (Narra 2).


B. The role of ethnic identity and social support also linked with mental health for

Asian Americans (Narra 2).


1. Research has shown that the evidence the stronger ethnic identity and

the greater degree of social support relate to better mental health

outcomes among minority groups.


2. The ethnic identity defines as the extend of ones sense of belonging

to individuals group.
3. With higher degree of social Support also could be helpful when

dealing with racial discrimination.


4. Social supports involve the ability to turn to others for help when

facing problem or difficult situation.


5. There is beneficial role of social support from family, parents,

friends students psychological adjustment.


V. Conclusion:

The impact of real and perceived racial discrimination has great impact on the group of

Asian American students. It is important to pay attention on those affects in these group of

students because the stress-related also carry the negative healthy outcomes. Having

stronger ethnic identity and realizing the importance to finding the support from those

group of students are also the key factors to decrease the negative effects from the racial

discrimination. Understanding the racial discrimination creates the students psychological

problems also infers this social issue that unable to show people in obvious way.

Understanding the complexities and impact of discrimination also helpful to find the

solutions to maintain healthy mental status for Asian American students.

Introduction

Today, people come to the United states from different part of the world, we have various

people from cultural background and mix together. Therefore, we cannot avoid the issues the

related to race particularly racial discrimination. Asian American students are one of the main

group to receive the influence of racial discrimination. (Hwang). They have taken highly

pressure from those psychological distresses and get different mental issues in their academic

life. Cultivating the sense of strong ethnic identity and social support can help them to dealing

with the racial problem in the daily life.

Racial problem can lead the negative effects on peoples mental health is that it happens

in different social setting and causes the mental status change. For example, The Hierarchical

Regression Model for psychological distress, as shown in the table 1, the discrimination get the

highest score in the different psychological disease categories. The number of each are goes

positive than any of others.
