Surat Al-Burūj (The Mansions of the Stars) -

By the sky containing great stars

By the heaven, holding the big stars.

‫ت ال ْب ُُروِج‬
ِ ‫ماءِ َذا‬
َ ‫س‬
ّ ‫َوال‬
Transliteration
Wassama-i thatialburooj
85:2

And [by] the promised Day

And by the Promised Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection);

Transliteration
ِ‫عود‬ َ ْ ‫َوال ْي َوْم ِ ال‬

And [by] the witness and what is witnessed,

And by the witnessing day (i.e. Friday), and by the witnessed day [i.e. the
day of 'Arafat (Hajj) the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah];

Washahidin wamashhood

Cursed were the companions of the trench

Cursed were the people of the ditch (the story of the Boy and the King).

Qutila as-habu alukhdood
85:5

[Containing] the fire full of fuel,

Fire supplied (abundantly) with fuel,

ِ ‫الّنارِ َذا‬

Annari thati alwaqood

When they were sitting near it

When they sat by it (fire),

ٌ ‫م عَل َي َْها قُُعود‬

ْ ُ‫إ ِذ ْ ه‬
Transliteration
Ith hum AAalayha quAAood
85:7

And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses.

And they witnessed what they were doing against the believers (i.e. burning
them).

ُ ‫ن‬
ٌ ‫شُهود‬ ُ ْ ‫ن ِبال‬
ِ ْ ‫مؤ‬
َ ‫مِني‬ َ ‫فعَُلو‬ َ ‫م عَل َ ٰى‬
ْ َ ‫ما ي‬ ْ ُ‫وَه‬
Transliteration
Wahum AAala ma yafAAaloona bilmu/mineenashuhood
85:8

Sahih International
And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah , the
Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,

They had nothing against them, except that they believed in Allah, the All-
Mighty, Worthy of all Praise!

‫ز‬ ‫زي‬ ‫ع‬ْ ‫ل‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ه‬ّ ‫ل‬‫بال‬ ‫نوا‬ ‫م‬ْ ‫ؤ‬‫ي‬ َ ‫قموا منهم إّل‬
‫أن‬
ِ ِ َ ِ ِ ُ ِ ُ ِ ْ ُْ ِ ُ َ َ ‫ما ن‬
َ َ‫و‬
ِ‫ميد‬ َ ْ ‫ال‬
ِ ‫ح‬
Transliteration
Wama naqamoo minhum illa anyu/minoo billahi alAAazeezi alhameed
85:9

Sahih International
To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah ,
over all things, is Witness.

Who, to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And
Allah is Witness over everything.

ُّ ‫ت َواْل َْرض ۚ َوالل‬

‫ه‬ ِ ‫وا‬
َ ‫ما‬

ّ ‫ال‬ ُ
‫ك‬ ْ ‫مل‬
ُ ‫ه‬
ُ َ ‫ذي ل‬
ِ ّ ‫ال‬

ٌ ‫شِهيد‬ َ ‫يٍء‬
ْ ‫ش‬ َ ‫ل‬ ّ ُ ‫عَل َ ٰى ك‬
Transliteration
Allathee lahu mulku assamawatiwal-ardi wallahu AAala kullishay-in
shaheed
85:10

Sahih International
Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women
and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will
have the punishment of the Burning Fire.
Muhsin Khan
Verily, those who put into trial the believing men and believing women (by
torturing them and burning them), and then do not turn in repentance, (to
Allah), will have the torment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of
the burning Fire.

ِ ‫مَنا‬ ُ ْ ‫ن َوال‬
ِ ْ ‫مؤ‬ ُ ْ ‫ن فَت َُنوا ال‬

َ ‫ذي‬ ّ ِ‫إ‬
‫ب‬
ُ ‫ذا‬ ْ ُ‫م وَل َه‬
َ َ‫م ع‬ َ ّ ‫جهَن‬
َ ‫ب‬
ُ ‫ذا‬ ْ ُ‫ي َُتوُبوا فَل َه‬
َ َ‫م ع‬

‫ق‬
ِ ‫ري‬ َ ْ ‫ال‬
ِ ‫ح‬
Transliteration
Inna allatheena fatanoo almu/mineenawalmu/minati thumma lam
yatooboo falahum AAathabujahannama walahum AAathabu alhareeq
85:11

Sahih International
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have
gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment.
Muhsin Khan
Verily, those who believe and do righteous good deeds, for them will be
Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise). That is the great success.
 ‫م‬ْ ُ‫ت ل َه‬ِ ‫حا‬ ّ ‫مُلوا ال‬
َ ِ ‫صال‬ ِ َ‫مُنوا وَع‬ َ ‫نآ‬
َ ‫ذي‬ِ ّ ‫ن ال‬
ّ ِ‫إ‬
َ ْ ‫ك ال‬
‫فوُْز‬ َ ِ ‫حت َِها اْل َن َْهاُر ۚ َٰذل‬
ْ َ ‫من ت‬
ِ ‫ري‬ ِ ‫ج‬
ْ َ‫ت ت‬ ٌ ‫جّنا‬َ
‫ال ْك َِبيُر‬
Transliteration
Inna allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo assalihati lahum jannatuntajree min
tahtiha al-anharu thalikaalfawzu alkabeer
85:12

Sahih International
Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe.
Muhsin Khan
Verily, (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) the Grip (Punishment) of your
Lord is severe.

ٌ ‫ديد‬ َ َ‫ك ل‬
ِ ‫ش‬ َ ْ ‫ن ب َط‬
َ ّ ‫ش َرب‬ ّ ِ‫إ‬
Transliteration
Inna batsha rabbika lashadeed
85:13

Sahih International
Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats.
Muhsin Khan
Verily, He it is Who begins (punishment) and repeats (punishment in the
Hereafter) (or originates the creation of everything, and then repeats it on
the Day of Resurrection).

ُ ‫ه هُوَ ي ُب ْدِئُ وَي ُِعيد‬

ُ ّ ‫إ ِن‬
Transliteration
Innahu huwa yubdi-o wayuAAeed
85:14

And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate,

And He is Oft-Forgiving, full of love (towards the pious who are real true
believers of Islamic Monotheism),

ُ َ‫وَهُوَ ال ْغ‬
Transliteration
Wahuwa alghafooru alwadood
85:15

Effecter of what He intends.

He does what He intends (or wills).

ُ ‫ريد‬ َ ّ‫ل ل‬
ِ ُ ‫ما ي‬ ٌ ‫فَّعا‬

85:17

Has there reached you the story of the soldiers -

Has the story reached you of the hosts,
 ُ ْ ‫ث ال‬
ِ‫جُنود‬ ُ ‫دي‬
ِ ‫ح‬ َ ‫ل أ ََتا‬
َ ‫ك‬ ْ َ‫ه‬
Transliteration
Hal ataka hadeethu aljunood
85:18

[Those of] Pharaoh and Thamud?

Of Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and Thamud?

Transliteration
ُ َ ‫ن وَث‬
َ ‫مود‬ َ ْ‫فِْرعَو‬
FirAAawna wathamood
85:19

But they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial,

Nay! The disbelievers (persisted) in denying (Prophet Muhammad (Peace
be upon him) and his Message of Islamic Monotheism).

‫ب‬ ِ ْ ‫فُروا ِفي ت َك‬

ٍ ‫ذي‬ َ َ‫ن ك‬ ِ ّ ‫ل ال‬
َ ‫ذي‬ ِ َ‫ب‬
Transliteration
Bali allatheena kafaroo fee taktheeb
85:20

Sahih International
While Allah encompasses them from behind.
Muhsin Khan
And Allah encompasses them from behind! (i.e. all their deeds are within
His Knowledge, and He will requite them for their deeds).

ٌ ‫حي‬
‫ط‬ ِ ‫م‬
ّ ‫من وََرائ ِِهم‬ ُ ّ ‫َوالل‬
ِ ‫ه‬
Transliteration
Wallahu min wara-ihimmuheet
85:21
