crossed paths with this violent predator,

Gonzalez said in a statement. Thankfully,
the DNA recovered that day was used to
hold the defendant accountable for this hor-
rific act and bring justice to his victim, who
bravely testified against him at trial.
The case was solved through what is
known as a cold hit. Jacobs DNA had
been entered into the New York DNA data-
bank following a conviction on federal
money laundering charges and matched
positively with the DNA sample obtained
from the victims rape kit back in 1998.
The defendant was arrested on October 4,
2013, according to the District Attorneys
office.

of Shooting His
Wife in Coney
Island Arrested
in Delaware

BROOKLYN:
olice say the ex-convict accused of
killing his estranged wife in Brooklyn
last weekend has been arrested in
Delaware.
Gabino Genao, 30, was captured by a
regional task force at a hotel in New
Brunswick Friday morning.
He has 15 prior arrests, including for
robbery and assault. Police say he shot his
30-year-old wife, Iveliss Alvarado-Genao
after the two got into a fight.
She was found dead last Saturday
night near West 36th Street and Canal Av-
enue in Coney Island.
Her family wants her to be remem-
bered as a hardworking and dedicated
mother. "She left behind two daughters, a
9-year-old and a 5-year-old. She worked a
full-time job, and then she went to school
at night. She was pursing an education in
the medical field. And she allows looked
out for her two daughters, her nieces, her
nephews, and always her mom, making
sure that whatever her mother needed,
everything was taken care of," said
Christopher Crespo, the victim's brother-
in-law.
Her family has set up a Go Fund Me
page to raise money for her funeral.
They have also created a college fund
for her two daughters.
Police said Genao will likely be extra-
dited back to the city next week.

faces up
to 14 years

Bronx man has been sentenced to consec-
utive terms totaling seven to 14 years in
prison for robbing an 81-year-old woman he
threatened to cut with a razor blade in her
apartment building elevator.
Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark
said the defendant, Homer Griffin, 51, of
Grand Concourse, was sentenced June 1 to two
consecutive terms of 3 12 to seven years in
prison by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Steven
Hornstein. Griffin pleaded guilty to third-de-

Jamaican vying for Connecticut senate seat
J amaican American Dr Ann-Marie Adams
is to run for office to represent Connecti-
cut under the banner of the Democratic
Party in the 2018 election for the Senate in
the United States.
Im really excited about being re-
cruited to run for office because, if you
check from Canada to Miami, youll find
that there are no black immigrants in office,
except for New York or Miami, in the
Florida area; and very few Jamaican Amer-
icans are in politics. There are none in Con-
necticut, she told the Jamaica Observer.
At first I was hesitant, because I am
used to covering politicians, not running for
office. I didnt think about it, it didnt dawn
on me to run for office until they were
doing a background check for a media pass
for the White House, Adams, a journalist,
pointed out. So after two years of looking
at my credentials and my accomplishments
over the last two decades, Im very, very
confident that I have a good chance to run
and win.

South Florida man was sentenced on
Friday to prison in connection with
the operation of a Jamaican-based fraudu-
lent lottery scheme.
Claude Shaw, 49, of Miramar, Florida,
was sentenced to serve 36 months in prison
and three years supervised release by US
District Court Judge William P. Dim-
itrouleas in Fort Lauderdale. Shaw was
also ordered to pay $128,440 in restitution.
Shaw pleaded guilty on March 22, to
one count of mail fraud in the Southern
District of Florida. As part of his guilty
plea, Shaw acknowledged that, from in or
around September 2013, through in or
around August 20l5, he participated in a
scheme to defraud victims in the United
States and unlawfully enrich himself.
Todays sentencing demonstrates the
Justice Departments commitment to com-
bating foreign-based lottery fraud schemes
targeting individuals in the United States,
said Acting Assistant Attorney General
Chad A. Readler of the Justice Depart-
ments Civil Division. Financial schemes
designed to defraud unsuspecting victims
will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of
the law.
As part of the scheme, victims
throughout the United States received tele-
phone calls in which they were falsely in-
formed that they had won over $1 million
in a lottery and needed to pay money in ad-
vance to claim their winnings.

Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, Council

free legal clinics to Haitians living in the
United States with TPS who wish to renew
their status.
These clinics will take place between
10:00 am and 4:00 pm on Friday, June 9th,
Thursday, June 15th, and Friday, June 30th
at the Council Member Eugenes District

Council Member Eugene has part-
nered with the New York Legal Assistance
Group (NYALG) and other immigration
legal service providers to offer free legal
services specifically tailored to the unique
situation of Haitian Temporary Protected
Status Holders who are required to rereg-
ister to maintain their status, TPS holders
will be able to consult with an immigration
attorney to renew their registration.
These events have been organized in
response to the Trump Administrations
decision, announced last week, to extend
TPS for Haiti only 6 months instead of the
expected 18 months. Haiti has been desig-
nated Temporary Protected Status, a spe-
cial humanitarian status for countries
recovering from natural disaster, disease,
or political upheaval, since a devastating
earthquake destroyed much of the coun-
trys infrastructure in 2010.
This humanitarian designation is typ-
ically extended for 18 months at a time,
after which it must be renewed by the Sec-
retary of Homeland Security. There is
grave uncertainty about the future of TPS
under the Trump Administration, and many
doubted that an extension would be
granted after the last designation was set to
expire this July.

Some US Visa Applicants Now Required
To Provide Social Media Handles
T
he Donald Trump administration has
rolled out a new questionnaire for U.S.
visa applicants worldwide that asks for so-
cial media handles for the last five years
and biographical information going back 15
years.
The new questions, part of an effort to
tighten vetting of would-be visitors to the
United States, was approved on May 23 by
the US Office of Management and Budget.
According to a Reuters report, critics
argue that the new questions will be overly
burdensome, lead to long delays in process-

Under the new procedures, consular
officials can request all prior passport num-
bers, five years' worth of social media han-
dles, email addresses and phone numbers as

Reform Act including legislation to allow
low-level violations like littering, public
urination and drinking in public to be
treated as civil, rather than criminal, of-

In its letter to de Blasio, the city bar
also notes that City Council has urged po-
lice to issue civil citations whenever possi-
ble. But it also notes that issuance of the
citations remains discretionary, and that

F athers day is celebrated around the world
as a day to honor and show love and re-
spect to fathers. Here in the United States we
adopted the third Sunday of June for the cel-
ebration.
The first Fathers day celebration in the
US dates back to two stories. The first being
about a woman name Sonora Smart Dodd
from Washington State, who came up with
the idea to celebrate her father William
Smart. The inspiration came to her while lis-
tening to a sermon about Mothers Day on
1909.
The other story that is associated with
the first Fathers Day in America took place

Five Signs It's Time to Fire Your Barber or Stylist

s the person who cuts your hair serving you
well? If you find yourself going to the
same barber or stylist just because it's com-
fortable, you may be selling yourself short.
Sometimes, we just need a little nudge in the
right direction. If the person who cuts your
hair is guilty of sloppy work, bad service, or
unsanitary conditions, it may be time to fire
your barber or stylist. These are the signs.
1) Unsanitary Conditions
I'm a big stickler for cleanliness. On your
next visit, look around and observe how san-
itary the shop is. Was the floor swept before
you sat down? Did your haircutter use a clean
comb (as opposed to one already laying on
the counter)? Are the operator's clippers or
shears free of other client's hair?
Did your barber or stylist place a neck
strip or clean towel around you neck before
putting the cape on you? Did your barber re-
move the straight razor from a sanitizer rather
than using one already laying on the counter?
These are a few basic sanitary issues that can
clue you in to how well your shop and hair-
cutter are following sanitary regulations. Bar-
bershops and salons can spread diseases and
infections such as ringworm, hepatitis, lice,
and impetigo (just to name a few) by using
improperly sanitized combs, brushes, clip-
pers, and razors. If your answer was "no" to
any or all of these questions, fire your barber
or stylist.
2) Sloppy Work
Next time you leave your barber or stylist,
when you get home take a good look at the
work. Stand in front of your bathroom mirror
with a hand mirror and check out the cut. Is
the haircut free of visible lines? Are the side-
burns and neckline even? Is the outlining
clean and crisp? Is everything laying as it
should (especially around the crown)? These
are all things to look for when spotting a bad
haircut.
3) Unfocused Attention
While you are receiving service, is your hair-
cutter guilty of talking on the phone, making
an appointment for another client, texting, or
otherwise not giving you undivided atten-
tion? If so, fire your barber or stylist.
4) Consistently Running Behind
Certainly, there will be times when your bar-
ber or stylist may be running behind on your
appointment -- every head and client is dif-
ferent, and there will sometimes be issues
that cause delays. That said, most of us be-
hind the chair know our speed and abilities,
so instances of running significantly behind

always harried and behind, it may be time to
fire your barber or stylist.
5) Lack of Interest
When was the last time your barber or stylist
suggested a new style or told you about a
new product? Does the person cutting your
hair seem more interested in talking about his
latest drama than he is in listening to you? It
is a haircutter's job to listen to you and rec-
ommend options haircuts and products that
will help you get the most out of your hair
and keep you looking your best. Not doing
so is just bad service. So, if you are stuck in
a rut (at least as far as your hair is concerned),
it may be time to fire your barber or stylist.
Many of us get stuck going to the same
person cut after cut because it's comfortable
and we're hesitant to try someone new. Some-
times it's easier to stick to the devil we know
than the saint we don't. Doing so may result
in us not always looking our best, so if your
barber or stylist is guilty of any of the above
offenses, take a leap of faith and find a great
barber or stylist. You may be glad you did!

ular and enduring Caribbean entertainers of
his generation. In a career spanning over
forty years, he has thrilled audiences world-
wide with an array of hits, often character-
ized by uniquely witty lyrics and double
entendre lines.
He will be joined by an eclectic group
of established and emerging artists, including

And making his Bankra Festival debut
will be vocalist Carl Rameses McDonald,
backed by the renowned True Tribute Or-
ganization, who have been among the most
unique cultural ambassadors of the reggae
music form for many years.
