Unit 6 Assignment 2 Document

In this assingment I will be reviewing a magazine which I have chosen and I will also be
comparing my magazine with other popular magazines. The magazine I wil be using is a
magazine based in Brazilian Jiujitsu and these are a series of magazines which show
technqiue, answer frequently asked questions and more. The magazine of this Brazilian
Jiujitsu magazine series I will be talking about is volume 2 / the 2 nd magazine of the series.

This magazine is a NME music magazine which are extremely popular

in the UK and used to be bought by millions of the public every week /
month. Because of online article because rapidly more popular, NME
has lost a lot of revenue but to keep there audience they still had,
NME decided to make there magazine free and you will now often find
them on public transport such as the Tube and on Trains.
This particular NME magazine only contain 1 main image on the front
cover which is a music artist which is extremely popular at the
moment, Kendrick lamar, this image would be the main visual image to
attract the audience the read this magazine.
Since Kendruck Lamar seems to be a big topic in this issue of NME in
there bottom centre of the magazine there is a big bold title with Kendrick Lamar and also
above from that title there is also quote from which he must have said in an interview
relevent to this article on him within this magazine.
In the top right corner of this magazine cover where there is White space within the main
cover image there are mini headings in white text to stand out from the magazine images
blue background. These 3 mini heading tell the reader which artist and bands have articles
within this magazine, for example one of these mini headings are about the Foals.
Another small detail about this magazine cover by NME is in the top left corner where there
classic NME box logo is which is very popular and distinct.
This next magazine front cover I will be reviewing is this issue of the
RollingStone magazine which is revolved around the very popular
actor, director and film producer, Seth Rogen.
This magazine front cover only has one image on the enire front cover
which is a close up shot of Seth Rogen who covers the main article of
this issue of the RollingStone magazine.
In the white space of the main image of this front cover, on the left
and right sides of the cover are many mini headings of other article
within this RollingStone magazine issue. Since the colour of the
White space on this front cover is white for the mini headings to
stand out the colour of the headings need to be as opposite colour to
the White space. These mini headings are black to extremely stand
out to the white white space.
At the top and centre of the magazine front cover is the RollingStone magazine title. This
title is exactly same on the front cover of every RollingStone magazine cover, Red font which
stands out with any image and this title text has a black drop down shadow effect on it.
On this issue of the RollingStone magazine in the bottom right corner placed vertically is the
barcode. Most magazines have there barcodes on the backcover. However, on this
RollingStone magazine the barcode is placed on the front cover.

This third magazine front cover I will be reviewing the another issue
of the RollingStones and this issue is quite different compared to
the regular issues which RollingStone release. This issue is has two
main articles, The best albums and songs of 2012 and also the top
Hip Hop song of all time.
I believe this magazine would sell a lot more issues in comparision to
other issues. First of all because the two main articles within this
issue. Also I believe the main image of this magazine front cover
would draw a large audience and a lot of attention because the music
artist on the front cover is Tupac who is one of the most popular and
one of the most looked up to Hip Hop artists.
This main image is in black and white and covers the whole of the
front cover of the magazine.
Since that the main image of this magazine cover is very dark the side mini headings need to
be brighter to stand out, These mini headings are all in white to stand out from the dark
main image on the front cover of the magazine. One unique feature of this particular is
where the RollingStones title is at the top of the front cover is how theyve use the main
image to block the text off because the magazine is so popular that you can block half the
title and it will still be easily recognised as the RollingStone magazine.
Addressing Audiences

Words:
Since my magazine is a much instructual magazine and teaching and showing instructions to
the readers about Brazilian jiujitsu there are not a lot to be said about the words of this
specific magazine cover.
In bold text across the top centre of the magazine cover in yellow with a black outline stroke
effect with also a drop shadow effect on the text says Brazilian Jiujitsu so striaght away this
is very clear about what this magazine is about. In smaller text by the side of the this main
title of this magazine is who wrote and create this magazine.
Below the main title of the magazine in white bold text with also a black outline stroke effect
with a drop shadow effect says Volume 2 which tell the reader than this magazine is the
second magazine this magazine series.
Below the White Volume 2 text is more bold yellow text which also has the black outlining
effect on it which says No Gi Techniques. This is telling the audiences / readers that all the
Brazilian Jiujitsu techniques being shown in this magazine and No Gi techniques.

Images:
On the front cover of this magazine it is two images but you could actually say that
it is one. There first image is at the bottom left of the front cover where a
technique is being demonstrated. The second image is a lot larger than the first,
covering around half of the front cover and this is the image of the author and
creater of this magazine series, Pedro Carvalho.
You could say that this is one whole image instead of two because both of these
image were taken behind a green screen and then brought together onto the
same canvas and then the green / back background was added on later on to
create this one big image for the magazine front cover.
I dont believe that the images shown on the front cover of this magazine are very intreging
for the audience because it doesnt really tell you or show you much about the actual
magazine. The first image in the bottom left corner is demonstrating a technique and the
second image is just a image of the author the this magazine series. I believe better images
could have been put on the front cover of this magazine to make it look more intreging to
get more people interested.
Sound:
N/A.

Sequences:
The sequence on the pages within my chosen magazine are very simple. Since that this is an
instructual magazine there is not paragraphs of text, maybe two or three lines of text
Maximum for every image in the pages.
To keep the pages clean and not cluttered within this magazine the text and pictures need to
spread out properly and not crowded with text because you need to see the pictures very
clearly since they are key part for the instructions and for every step.
Each page varies to how many images or how much text is on them. Some pages will have
one very large image with only maybe one line of text and other pages have up to four
smaller sized images with more text on one page.

Colours:
In this magazine I have chosen the colours are very restricted. Every single page within the
magazine is white and all the pictures / images which have been printed within this
magazine have all been printed in black and white, mostly probably to save cost when
producing and printing the magazine out.
Also all the text inside of this magazine is black so that it is easily readable on the white
paper. The page number markings in the bottom left and right of the pages.
One last small detail on the pages within this magazine I have chosen is the numbers by the
side of each step. In order for these numbers to stand by on the white pages and beside the
image the numbers are black to be easily readable on the white coloured paper.
Fonts:
Within this magazine, I have chosen there really is not much difference in the font used
within the pages of this magazine apart from the Front cover of the magazine and then the
numbers pages inside.
Inside the numbered page within my chosen magazine the font is completely different to the
size, style and effect used on the fonts on the front cover of the magazine. The font used in
the actual magazine is a very simple, appropriatly sized and easily readable font which is all
coloured in the colour black so it is even easier to read on the white coloured paper of the
magazine.
The font used inside of the magazine is very standard and simple which is very good for the
type of magazine that this is. However, I do think that the text is a little bit too small and
would be slightly better it the sizing of this font / text was increased only maybe one or two
points.
Construction of Content

Narratives:
This magazine I have chosen doesnt really have any narratives or story to it, it is an
instruction magazine so you could say that the narratives for this magazine is each step such
as step one, two, three and four for a certain technique being demonstrated within the
magazine.
Since that, this is an instruction magazine; the language within this magazine needs to be
extremely clear and in as less text it can be so its short and clear on what needs to be done.
Sadly, because this is an instruction magazine there is not a lot that can be said about the
narrative about this magazine since that the language / diction used in this magazine is very
limited.

Layout:
The layout of my magazine is the same on each page, depending on how many steps the
technique being shown on that page has. Most pages in this magazine have around three or
four images on a page followed by around one to three lines of text for every image, which is
on that page.
The page layouts are very important in this magazine since being an instruction magazine.
The images needs to be appropriately spread equally away from each other across the page.
Also since that, there is text associated to every image that is on that page, it is very
important that it is extremely clear which text is associated with what image and which
image is demonstrated what I being instruction within the text on the page.
The layout of the pages in this magazine vary, for example, most pages have at least three or
four images per page. However, more detailed page may only have two, some pages even
only one image. This is to really show the demonstration being shown in the images very
clear so people dont get the technique wrong and they can easily see the details they needs
to cover during the step by step instructions.
Captions:
In this magazine I have chosen to review in this assignment there are at least one caption for
every single page within the magazine, many page have two, some even three captions per
page.
For each new section of the magazine is an entire title page with a large image generally
showing what the topic is about and large caption text above stating what topic is within the
next few pages of the magazine.
On every regular page of this magazine where it is, showing steps of a technique there are
two small captions at the top of every one of these pages. These two captions are both in
the top left corner of the pages.
The first / top caption in the top left corner is marking and telling the reader what order and
number this technique is in the magazine. For example on page 53 of the magazine which is
the first page on Guard Attacks the order and number this technique is Technique 9-A. The
font used for this text is very similar to the regular text used on the standard text within the
magazines pages but slightly bigger by around two four points.
The second caption in the top left corner of the technique instruction pages is directly below
the first caption in the top left corner. However, this caption tells the reader which technique
is being shown on that page and the correct name for the technique. This captions font is a
lot bigger to any of the other text on the page and is a lot bold with thick black bold text for
this caption.

Anchorage:

I believe the magazine I have chosen to review in this assignment has very clear anchorage
on the front cover. I think this because the thing, which stands out the most from this entire
magazine is the title of the magazine which is simply, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and the only
people / reason that somebody would be attracted this magazine and for them to be
anchored in is because they have an interest in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The average person would
not pick this magazine up because Brazilian jiu-jitsu is such a unique and specialist sport and
not extremely popular in the UK.
So the only people I believe this magazine would anchor in are people who either do
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, have partaken in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in the past or people who have heard of
Brazilian jiu-jitsu either through things such as in the news, the interest or on Television (TV)
on shows such as the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) or the Eddie Bravo Invitational
(EBI).
Codes and Conventions

Linguistic Codes:
When talking about Linguistic codes for the magazine I have chosen to review in this
assignment there is only one language within this magazine and there is no audio equivalent
inside to listen to.
This magazine, which is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique instruction magazine, is and has only
been printed in the English language for people to read and there is no audio tape or DVD
menu equivalent included in this technique instruction magazine to watch or listen to.
Since that this is an instructional magazine the language used in this magazine is very short,
clear and somewhat technical. The language and text used within the pages of this magazine
needs to be very short to maximise space on the pages for the images which are extremely
relevant to the text next to them. The language within the pages of this magazine needs to
be very simple and clear so people know exactly what they need to do to perform the
techniques correctly.
You could also say that some of the language within this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructional
magazine is somewhat technical because the text and language being used you could say it
is the language of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Examples of this are the name of the techniques within
the magazine in the captions at the top of each page.

Visual:
When talking about the visual effects of the magazine I have chosen to review in this
assignment I believe there are several advantages and disadvantages as for the visuals for
this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructional magazine.
The disadvantages of the visuals of this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructional magazine is the lack of
colour mainly I think. Every page within in this magazine apart from the front cover and back
cover / blurb which are coloured. It is fine that the colour of the actual pages in this
instructional magazine are white because white is just the standard colour for pages / paper.
However, I do believe that the magazine would become a lot higher quality in comparison to
the quality of it now if the images on the instructional pages were coloured / higher quality.
Personally I believe that the producer of this instructional magazines images within have
been printed in black and white to save the cost of production and printing when publishing
this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques magazine series.
The advantages of the visual style which this magazine I am reviewing contains is how they
have managed to fit multiple images per page and how they have managed to keep the text
within the magazine very clear, small and simple to leave more room for the instructional
images. In addition, an advantage with the visual style of this magazine is that all the pages
are in black and white. The pages are coloured white, all the text is coloured black to be
easily readable on the white papers and every demonstrated image is in black and white. A
good thing about this is that it would have probably made the production and publishing of
this magazine a lot cheaper not printing and publishing any of it in colour.

Audio:
N/A.

Symbolic:
When reviewing my chosen magazine to see if there is anything symbolic within any of the
pages on this magazine it is very hard.
There is actually nothing symbolic and there are no symbols and logos on this magazine to
talk about. However, there are many images in this magazine, which I guess you could say is
symbolic because these images do actually symbolise something when looking at them and
reading the text on that same page which is relevant to the image.

Technical:
When reviewing my chosen magazine this assignment for any technical qualities it is
extremely hard.
There is nothing technical about this magazine, no audio-taped variations of the magazine or
DVD menu of the technique shown in the magazine included within the magazine where you
can watch in video format.
However, if someone were to look at the captions of the techniques in the book and search
for it in to a website such as YouTube then several instructional videos will come up with
video instructional of the same things, which are shown in this magazine.
Modes of Address:
When looking how the modes of address are put across to the readers of this Brazilian Jiu-
Jitsu magazine there is not much depth, I can go in when talking about the modes of address
for this magazine.
Since that, this magazine is a purely instructional magazine the only modes of address are
the producer of the magazine or the text on the magazine tell You what to do. Move Your
right hand, now move your right hand.
Those are small examples are the mode of address of this instructional magazine and this is
the only modes of address which is shown and used throughout this entire instructional
magazine.
Audience Feedback

Focus Groups:
Being in the Focus Group for this magazine myself, I can see how hard it would be to attract
people to this magazine and how hard it could be to sell.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is such a specialist and specific combat sport, which is nowhere near as
popular as other martial arts such as Kickboxing, Boxing, and Wrestling etc. Especially in the
UK, therefore, I believe that the only way this magazine could be successful is that if it was
eligible to be bought online with worldwide shipping and available to buy from websites
giants like Amazon for example.
The average person would not pick this magazine up because Brazilian jiu-jitsu is such a
unique and specialist sport and not extremely popular in the UK.
(EBI).

Audience Panels:
There are many panels of the media, which you can study Brazilian Jiu-jitsu from reading,
audio tapes, watching on television (TV) and watching on the internet. Watching and study
Brazilian on any media format is on the internet by far.

Questionnaires:
A questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions and other
prompts for gathering information from respondents. Although they are often designed
for statistical analysis of the responses, this is not always the case.
Many companies and organisations use questionnaires to gather information from their
target audience, sometimes to see what their audience would think about an upcoming
potential change, some questionnaires companies may do is asking simple things such as
customers customer service thoughts.
Questionnaires are very easy and cheap surveys that a company can do in comparison to
other types of surveys; this is why they are very popular and frequently used by companies
to gather information from their target audience / the public.
In this assignment, I created an 8-question questionnaire and got 10 of my classmates / class
piers to fill out on a topic of this specific magazine I have chosen to review for this
assignment. I will now do a statistical analysis from some of the questions from my
questionnaire.

Do you think the quality of the pages are high quality in the magazine?

Yes No

The question above is I asking my classmates / class piers if they think the quality of the
pages are high quality in the magazine.
60%, 6/10 of my class mates / class piers who did my questionnaire claim that they DO think
the quality of the pages within my chosen magazine are high enough quality and good.
40%, 4/10, the remaining members of my class mates / class piers who did my questionnaire
claim that they DO NOT think the quality of the page within my chosen magazine are high
enough quality and good.
These results for this question on my questionnaire surprised me because I personally
believe that the quality of the pages and the quality of the front and back cover of this
magazine are not very good quality in comparison to other magazines of the same type.
What is your favorite type of magazine?

News Musi c Fa shi on Sport Ga mes Other

The question above is I asking my classmates / class piers is what their favourite type of
magazines are.
The question had multiple choices that they can answer with, News, Music, Fashion, Sport,
Games and other.
None, 0/10 people claim that news magazines are not their favourite type of magazine to
read.
Only 10%, 1/10 people who filled my questionnaire in said there favourite type of magazine
to read is a music magazine.
20%, 2/10 people who filled my questionnaire in said there favourite type of magazine to
read is a magazine which is based on fashion.
Only 10%, 1/10 people who filled my questionnaire in said there favourite type of magazine
to read is magazines based on sports topics.
Only 10%, 1/10 people who filled my questionnaire in said there favourite type of magazine
to read are magazines that are based on Video games.
50%, 5/10 people who filled my questionnaire in said there favourite type of magazine to
read are magazines which are based on other topics that are completely different to any of
the other topics listed with this question which very surprised me.
The result of this question surprised me a lot! I would have expected more people to choose
either the Games, Music or Sports type of magazine as their favourites since that they are
extremely popular topics that have very large interest by many people!

Reviews:
Since this magazine is available online, I will now look at many reviews from websites where
this instructional magazine is available from and I will review this magazine myself since that
I am a part of the target audience and focus group for this magazine.

Complaints:

There are several complaints I believe people would may about this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
instructional magazine and I will analyse the magazine now and mention several of the
potential complaints, which may be made by the public about this magazine.
