Love Makes You Divergent

People say that love drives a person do crazy things in this story, we see this taken to the

extreme. The change in character in this story is not intentional. One character did not seek to

change the other. Theses two characters, Beatrice (aka Tris) and Four, find each other and slowly

start to do things that would not ordinarily do. In the novel Divergent, the author Veronica Roth

uses description, revealing action, and first person narration to show how being in love can

cause someone to take risks that they would not ordinarily take in life.

At the beginning of the story the reader can see how the connection to one person is

greater than the illusion of fear. In this part of the story the author uses description to convey this

idea. Four is afraid of heights. Despite this he climbs the ferris wheel with Tris, simply to be in

her presence. This is significant because it shows that his connection to Tris is greater than his

fear. This makes him go out of is comfort zone and do things he would not ordinarily do. A

laugh hitches in his throat. It sounds like a panicked breath. (Roth 143) Here the author uses

description to show Fours panic. This descriptive paragraph supports the theme that love can
make a person do things they don't ordinarily do because in this sense even though Four is afraid

of heights he still comes on the ferris wheel.

In the middle of the book Four reveals something he has never told anyone before. In the

sense the author uses revealing action to convey that love can make you do things you would not

ordinarily do. For example Four brings Tris into his fear landscape. A fear landscape is a tool the

dauntless use to teach their soldiers to face their fears. The fear landscape is a revelation of one's

fears into a simulation. Within the fear landscape Four reveals a great deal about himself. For

example, his real name, why he dot his nickname, and his faction origin. Four shows her what

his childhood was like when he was beat and she gains a better understanding of him. I look

from Marcus [Fours Abnegation father], who walks slowly towards us to Four, who inches

slowly back, and everything comes together. Marcus had a son who joined Dauntless. His name

was Tobias. (Roth 329) Here the authors use of revealing action helps in gaining an

understanding of the reader and how he has changed in the sense that he now trust people.

Because Tris Four was very to himself from this use of revealing action the author has shown us

that his has changed.

Towards the end of the book the author uses first person narration to explain how the

character is changing because she is in love. In this particular scene Tris is fifth ing against

Tobias while is under a simulation that make him forget her; all he knew was that he needed to

kill her. At one point in the fight Tris gets a hold of a gin and at first points the gun at him and

then realizes she would never he able to hurt him. I couldn't do that, it would have been like
shooting myself. Here the author uses 1st person narration to show how Tris has changed by

loving Four. The authors use of 1st person narration gives the reader inside on what Tris is

thinking.

By the middle of the story the reader sees that both Tris and Four are changing because of

the influence they have on each other. First Four climbs the Ferris wheel; which is out of the rod

only for Four considering he is afraid of heights. Secondly Four learns to trust which was not

something he did with anyone however Tris was his exeption. Lastly, Tris risks her life for Four.

The text gives the reader more insight by using description, revealing action and first person

narration. One example from the text of description, reading action and first person narration is

Then I realize what it is. Its him. Something about him makes me feel like I am a pout to fall.

Or turn into liquid. Or burst into flames (Roth 143) some may claim that here the author uses all

three writing techniques to show that love can drive a person do things they do not ordinarily do.

However what this claim fails to mention is that love can also change the way one feels. In the

example above Tris feels some ing she does not ordinarily feel.
