1/ (25 pts) An oxygen cylinder of volume 30 liters has an initial gauge pressure of 15 atm and a temperature of 27 C.
After some oxygen is withdrawn from the cylinder, the gauge pressure drops to 11 atm and its temperature drops to
17 C. Estimate the mass of oxygen taken out of the cylinder.
2/ (25 pts) You use an aluminum ruler to measure a steel rod. The ruler is calibrated to be accurate at 20oC.
You measure the steel when both the steel rod and the aluminum ruler are at a
temperature of 100oC. At this temperature, the rod measures 60 cm as read off the "hot" aluminum
ruler. What is the "true" length of the steel rod when it is at a temperature of 20oC?
3/ (25 pts) A hollow sphere with an inner radius R and outer radius 2R is made of material of density D and
is floating in a liquid of density 2D. The interior is now filled with material of density D so that the sphere
just floats completely submerged. Find D in terms of D.
4/ (25 pts) A column of mercury of 10 cm length is contained in the middle of a narrow horizontal 1 m long
tube which is closed at both the ends. Both the halves of the tube contain air at a pressure of 76 cm of
mercury. By what distance will the column of mercury be displaced if the tube is held vertically?
