 Introduction

The global goals are a list of 17 goals, which were organized and agreed on by the United
Nations. The aim is to improve the world around us. They cover situations and problems, which
should be improved. It was settled on to attempt to complete all these goals by the year of 2030.
To keep up to date and to be able to analyze the progress made, the improvements and the goals
themselves are reset every 15 years. The United Nations believes that there is a possibility that all
17 goals can be reached in the remaining time, through the act of society itself. The UN is certain
that he goals can also be reached through the launch of the millennium goals in 2001, which are
separate 8 goals that cover broader problems. Most these goals were successful, which gives the
UN hope into believing that the Global goals can be as well. Social improvements are not the only
way to measure how the world is changing, but Michael Green held a ted talk about a Index
called; Social Progress Index, which uses three main fields that can support the measurements.
The first field is basic needs for survival, which has four components: Nutrition & basic needs,
water & sanitation, shelter, personal safety. The second field is, foundation of well being, and the
components are: Access to basic knowledge, access to information & communication, health and
wellness, and sustainable ecosystem. The last field is opportunity, which has personal rights,
personal freedom & choice, tolerance & inclusion, and access to advanced education as their
consumption.

The fourth Global goal is Quality education. The reason for this global goal is for all
children to receive equal quality education. If everyone in each country, would become the same
quality education, it would result into a better future for the individuals and as well as the
community and society, because companies would have well educated workers. This goal mainly
targets children in countries dont offer a proper education. Quality education does not only mean
learning facts and basic knowledge, but also being creative, being taught how to handle social
situations as well as team-working skills. Different countries have strengths and weaknesses in
their education level, therefor; there are separate targets within the global goal to help to show
how to improve education. The fourth global goal has 10 targets, which specifically state what else
should be completed within the target.

 Background on Issue
According to the Guardian, there are 781 million adults over the age of 15 that are
illiterate. Those adults mostly werent offered an education as a child, which included learning
how to read and write. Countries such as India dont offer a basic education to the citizens, like
other countries do. Not only does the lack of education offered effect the amount of learning, but
also the amount of qualified teachers. There may not be any transportation to the school. Parents
might not be able to pay the school fee. The religion where the child live in, may forbids the
children (especially the female gender) to attend school. Gender inequality, population increase,
money income in families decrease, and child slavery are all aspects that can also affect the quality
and quantity of education. Children must not only a quality education, but they must have
qualified teachers, appropriate facilities, books and stationary.

In the graph above, one can see that the global literacy rates. Most illiterate people live in
the northern part of Africa. The dark blue fields mean that the literate percentage is 97%, meaning
that almost the whole society has the ability to read. The lowest literate percentage is 35% and the
color red represents it. On the map you can see that five countries that are colored red, indicated
that more than half of their population cannot read, and are probably uneducated. Four of these
countries are in Africa, these being: South Sudan, Niger, Mali and Burkina. It is difficult to fully
evaluate, why this may be, but there is a trend in the following countries. The five countries that
are shown in the color red are distinctly poorer than the countries, which are colored in blue. The
literacy rates can also be assessed on the safety of the countries. If we compare the countries in
Europe, there are less wars and safety problems than in some of the countries that are colored in

red or yellow. This may mean that the amount of quality education opportunities can be impacted
by the safety of the country.

Above you can see two different diagrams, the first one showing the adult literacy rates
and the bottom one showing the youth literacy rates. The dark blue indicates that 90-100% of the
countries population can read. Darker orange represents that less than 50% of the countries
population can read. When comparing the two diagrams, one can see that there isnt a big
difference in which countries have the least amount of literacy rates. For both age groups the same
countries are colored in dark orange. This is interesting, because even though there is are several
years in between the age groups, including when the adults went to school, if they did, the
illiterate rates only slightly changed. There are still countries that are colored in dark orange.

What is the goal trying to achieve?

Ensure Inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning
opportunities for all. (Goal 4: Quality Education | The Global Goals). The aim of this goal
is to offer a quality education for everyone, not depending on their religion, gender or race. A
quality education includes learning facts and gaining knowledge, but also learning about
creativity, building team-working skills, and being to communicate with others. If everyone
would have a quality education, this would help each individual to have a better future, by
giving them better job opportunities. If everyone would have a quality education, this would
also further help to meet the other goals. To be able to resolve all the other goals, there have
to be more voices that stand up for them, more educated brains that come up with ideas how
to solve poverty or climate change.

What sub-targets make up the global goal?

Each of the goals has separate targets, which are more specific what should be
completed along with the goal. In global goal number 4, there are 10 separate targets. These
targets should also be completed by 2030.
The first target is to ensure by 2030 that all boys and girls finish a free, quality
primary and secondary education. The second target is, to ensure that all girls and boys have a
quality early development and pre-school education preparing them for primary. The third

target is to ensure that all women and men have access to an affordable and quality education,
including universities and colleges. Anther target is to increase the number of youth and
adults who have relevant skills to help to get a decent job and employment. The fifth target is
to eliminate gender inequalities in education and to ensure that there is equal access to all
levels of education fro everyone, including people with disabilities and children in difficult
situations either mentally of physically. The next target is aiming to ensure that all youth and
adults, in both genders, achieve reading and writing, as well as math and science. The seventh
target is trying to ensure that all learners access an education promoting sustainable
development and teaching them about gender equality, human rights, global citizenship etc.
The eighth target is trying to build and upgrade education facilities, which include help for
child disabilities and provide a save and non-violent environment for all students. The ninth
target is trying to expand the amount of scholarships globally available in developing
countries, for enrollment education, which includes trainings that teach special skills,
information. These types of training should also cover fields such as engineering, technology,
and scientific programs. This target is being aimed to be meet by 2020, ten years before the
goal itself should actually be meet. The last target is trying to increase in the number of
qualified teachers, which includes teacher training in developing countries, especially
countries that are least developed and islands.

Related Millennium Development goal

The Millennium Development goals are eight separate goals, which were aimed to be
completed by 2015. The first goal, was trying to eradicate hunger and poverty. The second
goal was aiming to achieve universal primary education. This goal is related to the fourth
global goal, quality education. Achieving quality education, can relate to several other
Millennium Development goals, such as eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. If people
would have an education, the chances for them to be employed are higher, therefor they
would have a paying job and they could afford food. Millennium goal three, four and five are
all in the medical area, but if more people would be education, the numbers of people wanting
to become doctors would increase. Therefor the chances of reducing child mortality,
improving maternal health and finding a cure for HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases,
would increase. Although 2015 has already passed, if the goal quality education would be
reached all the targets as well, several other important problems would also be solved.

Taking Action

What action did I take?

To be able to fully understand how to do an action that supports quality education, I
firstly needed to understand, what a quality educational lesson must contain. I also wanted to
do be in teaching position, so I could fully comprehend with what quality education in a
school is. To do this, I volunteered to help in pre-school classes. There I read to the children
and interacted with them. I also talked about my project and quality education.
Including volunteering at the pre-school, I did three actions. One of them being
working together with Berta and Lynn. We decided on having a book donation, where
students on both campuses could donate any English reading books that they dont read
anymore. This book donation would last for two weeks long. After one week we already had
115 books donated, which was a huge success. We did not only want to donate these books to
an organization, but we wanted the whole school to also be part of this action. Therefor we
came up with the idea to have the tenth graders that visit Cambodia for their class trip, to take
the books with them. When in Cambodia, they could deliver the books to schools that they
visit.
Taking part in the service conference that was organized by the Chatsworth School was my
third action. Again, Berta, Lynn and I, made sure that we would go together, so we could also
gain more information for our goal. We wanted to take in this conference so we could spread
the word, about what we were trying to organize at our school, trying to motivate others to do
the same at their schools. We also invited the students that attended the conference as well, to
donate their own books to our book donation. Sadly we werent very successful, with having
any people donating any books, but hopefully the other student were motivated to this action
at their own school.

Sustainability action week

The sustainability action week lasted for a whole week from the 29th of May to the 2nd
of June. My partners and I had decided that we would start the book donation at the beginning
of this week.
On Wednesday we were assigned to present about our project and actions, at the junior
campus. My partners and I prepared a PowerPoint presentation, where we included some our
researched information about quality education. We also included a short description about

what the global goals were, so the students would also have a better understanding about what
we were doing. One of slides in our presentation was about, what actions we were taking so
for example we included pictures of us volunteering at the pre-school. We also brought along
a book donation box, so the children would recognize it. We tried our best to promote our
donation and encourage the students to donate their own books as well.
On Friday the whole grade eight were supposed to create a presentation with posters
etc. to present in the forum to the whole school. Berta, Lynn and I prepared posters with
statistics and graphs, as well as a PowerPoint together. We then developed guidelines for what
we had to be included in our speech. We thought that it was very important that all students
and teachers should know about our book donation that we were holding, therefor I decided
that I would explain about our donation at the end of our last presentation to publicize it.

Measuring success
With all the actions put together, I did have big success with my actions. I tried to
inspire several others of my classmates that were also researching about quality education, to
volunteer at the pre-school as well. By volunteering there I was able to teach smaller children
and show them how lucky they are to have a quality education. By spreading the word about
volunteering at the pre-school, several others of my classmates went as well. This was a huge
success, because the more students that want to volunteer at pre-schools, the more would also
be willing to volunteer at other schools that are underdeveloped and dont have qualified
teachers, who have the ability to teach quality education.

 Attending the servICE conference, have me an opportunity to explain about my other
two actions. Berta, Lynn and I explained about our book donation and tried to motivate others
there to either come to our school and donate, or hold a book donation at their own school.
The last action was my most successful one out of all three. Again I worked together
with my two partners, Lynn and Berta. Together we organized a book donation, and after only
five days of having the donation open, we had 115 books donated to us. Now after having the
book donation open for two weeks, we have approximately 150 books. Donating these books
to a school we could target all the students that attend that school.

Reflecting on my experience
Thinking back at my experience during the process of researching about quality
education, thinking about an action, from the beginning on I wanted to impact a large amount
of people. Even though I did so, if I would do this project a second time, I would try to do
another action affecting children with disabilities. I had researched about an organization that
is at the National Library of Singapore. This organization is called KidsRead, where people
can volunteer to read so children who live with difficulties that could include, disabilities or
financial difficulties etc. Unfortunately I was unable to attend to this organization and
volunteer due to an age restriction, but if I would do this project again in the future, the age
restriction would not be a problem anymore, allowing me to attend.

Conclusion
In conclusion, I find that learning about the global goals and quality education in
particular, is very important. Researching about problems in the world and getting familiar
with them, taught me that every single move counts. That whatever I do, can make a
difference. While doing the actions I released how important knowing about what still needs
to be done, not only in my personal community, but also all over the world. Before this
assessment, I took education for granted, without thinking about other children around the
world. These children cannot go to school regularly, because of political reasons, financial
difficulties, or safety restraints. I feel that this goal is one of the most important goals, because
when having a quality education, you can get a job and peruse your own future. Reflecting on
all the information that I learnt about this unit, I would also want to keep volunteering and
organizations that promote quality education. After helping out the pre-school it opened my

perspective on teaching and education in general. Quality education is such an essential step
for the whole world to be a respective environment for everyone.
