MIDTERM EXAM in EARTH SCIENCE for Grade 11

Name: _____________________________________________ Score: ______________________

Grade & Section: _____________________________________ Date: _______________________

I. Modified True or False

A. Direction: Identify whether the following statements are true or false. If the statement is true, write TRUE. If the
statement is false, underline the word or phrase which makes the statement false and write the correct answer on the
blank space provided before each number. Each item corresponds to two (2) points respectively.
____________________1 Few minutes later after the explosion, universe temperature dropped into 1 billion F cool
enough to form atomic nuclei.
____________________2. After gravity splits off from the 4 forces of nature, the universe expanded and cools which
sends some burst of energy fueling the hyperinflation of the universe as proposed by Hoyle.
____________________3. Thermal Nuclear Fusion results in the formation stars with circum-stellar disk of dust
becoming the meteors, meteorites, and asteroids.
____________________4. Planetesimal Theory proposed that a star passed close to the sun where the tidal force
between the passing star and the sun drew large amounts of matter forming the solar system.
____________________5. The four outer planets are called terrestrial planets because they are made up of primary
materials that make up the sun which are helium and hydrogen.
____________________6. One of the factors that can sustain life is water that is vital for the early life forms/organisms.
____________________7. Lithosphere covers all of the solid part of Earth both on its surface up to the deeper depth of
the core.
____________________8. The outer core is in solid form which allows primary waves to travel or pass through.
____________________9. Stratosphere is considered to be the densest among the layers of atmosphere because of its
weight of all the layers of the atmosphere compressing it.
____________________10. In the biosphere system, an organism can consume another organism to allow heat to
circulate to the ecosystem.
____________________11. When a mineral absorbs all the color of the spectrum, the mineral will appear as color white.
____________________12. When a mineral breaks in a predictable manner, then its breakage is described as fracture.
____________________13. In the rock cycle, sedimentary rocks can change into another type of rocks.
____________________14. Rocks are composed of crystalline structure which is a period array of atoms.
____________________15. Quartz is a mineral which gives off an odour similar to rotten eggs like Quarts.
____________________16. Metamorphic rocks are formed from igneous rocks that were exposed to high pressure &
temperature deep below the surface of Earth.
____________________17. Some of the sedimentary rocks are formed from compaction of the remains of organisms.
____________________18. Solidification of magma forms a metamorphic rock & melting a metamorphic rock would
form igneous rocks.
____________________19. Minerals arranged from softest to hardest: talc, gypsum, calcite, fluorite, topaz, quartz.
____________________20. Usually, the mineral is rubbed on a streak plate to determine its colour.

B. Direction: Each item consists of two statements. Read and analyse each statement & identify whether it is true or
false. Write A if both statements are True, B if the first statement is True and the other is False, C if the first statement
is False & the other is True, and D if both statements are False. (2 points per item)
_________1. CMB is said to be the oldest light on the universe. It is used to study the composition and age of universe.
_________2. The universe is approximately 13.8 billion years old. Sun is considered as planet and not a star.
_________3. Cooled nebula shrunk & rotated with its rings forming meteors. Remaining part of nebula formed the Sun.
_________4. Earth chemically dated back around 9 billion years ago. It is mainly made up of helium & hydrogen.
_________5. Earths collision with meteors is said to be the cause of its present tilt. It has a shape of an oblate trapezoid.
_________6. Geosphere includes rocks & minerals and landforms. It is composed of crust, mantle, & core respectively.
_________7. Mantle is made partially molten rocks & is the largest part of the Earth. It has extremely low temperature.
_________8. More than 2.5% of water on Earth is fresh water. Organisms depend mainly on water for survival.
_________9. Atmospheric layers protect Earth from external threats in space. It is predominantly composed of oxygen.
_________10. Flow of energy is governed by the 1st law of thermodynamics. More energy is transferred from each level.
_________11. Pangaea is the supergiant land mass where all continents came from. It was proposed by Alfred Wegener.
_________12. Seismology is the study of rocks, minerals & landforms. Plate movement is caused by convection current.
_________13. Pumice has smaller minerals than granite. Igneous rocks can be intrusive type or extrusive type.
_________14. Sandstones are metamorphic rock. Obsidians are sedimentary rocks.
_________15. All types of stones are of volcanic origin. Not all minerals have economic value.
_________16. Rocks are composed of minerals. Minerals are composed of atoms.
_________17. Topaz is harder than calcite. Hardness refers to the measure of the minerals resistance to scratching.
_________18. Color is considered more reliable than hardness in terms of identifying minerals. Gold is a mineral.
_________19. Minerals are organic solids. Coal are organic solids and are considered as rocks.
_________20. Talc, the softest mineral is used in Johnsons baby powder. All minerals have the magnetic properties.
II. Sequencing
A. Direction: Read the statements below about the origin and development of universe. Then, arrange the statements in
order by which each event take place. Write the numbers from1 to 6 on the space provided before each procedure.
_________As the universe expands and cools which somehow send some burst of energy fuelling the hyperinflation of
the universe.

_________ Less than a billionth of a second after the Big Bang, a bubble much smaller than a fraction of an atom forms.
This is the universe which is unimaginably small and extremely hot.

_________Within the bubble are the four known forces of nature: gravity, electromagnetism, & weak and strong nuclear
force, combined to form a super force. Gravity splits off from the four forces.

_________One billion years after, stars takes shape producing heavier elements like Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon.

_________As it became smaller, it rotated faster, casting off rings of gas and forming a disk-like shape. The centrifugal
force from the nebulas rotation and the gravitational force from the mass of the nebula formed rings of gas
outside.

_________The universe is still less than a second old when the super force decays into the separate forces of nature.
After few minutes, its temperature dropped drastically and extremely low which is cool enough to form
atoms.

_________Atoms form lighter element which is hydrogen. Hydrogen fuses forming Helium, then so on and so forth.
380,000 years later, light travels to the darkness (called the cosmic microwave background).

_________As the nebula continued to shrink, these rings condensed into various densities of planets and their satellites.
The remaining part of the nebula, which has the most mass, formed the sun.

_________Nine billion years after, matter and gravity combined forming a perfectly typical star. Pressure creates heat at
its core which triggers the thermal nuclear fusion from a rotating cloud of gas or nebula.

_________ The gas cooled, and it began to shrink.

III. Enumeration
Direction: Enumerate what is asked for each item. You can write your answers at the back of this paper.
1-3. Theory on the Formation of Universe
4-6. Theory on the Formation of Stellar System or Solar System

1. Why is it important to know the properties of minerals? Are minerals important to human civilization? Cite three
concrete examples.

2. What are the factors that make the Earth a suitable place for life to emerge and flourish? If you have an extra-terrestrial
friend (or an alien) and you are going to invite him in your planet (the Earth), how will you describe it and how will you
convince them to visit our planet?
