PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT

Course Code: 15BBA-0GM11T Credits: 03

Course Objective: The course objective is to make students aware of the organizations environmental
changes and make them adapt to these changes by providing fundamental knowledge and exposure to
the concepts, theories and practices in the field of management.

Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to:
Understand various principles of management that have general applicability to all types of
enterprises; basic management philosophy and decision making; principles involved in planning,
organizing, leading, and controlling; and recent concepts in management.
Diagnose the management issues in organizations.
Solve the management issues in real practice.

Course Contents:

Unit I: Introduction
Concept, Nature, Process and Significance of Management; Managerial levels, skills, Functions and
Roles; Management vs. Administration; Coordination as Essence of Management; Development of
Management Thought: Classical, Neo-Classical, Behavioral, Systems and Contingency Approaches.

Unit II: Planning


Nature, Scope and Objectives of Planning; Types of plans; Steps in Planning; Limitations of Planning,
Making Planning effective; MBO: Concept, Types, Process and Techniques of Decision-Making; Common
difficulties, Bounded Rationality, Business Forecasting-Techniques, Organizing: Concept, Nature, Process
and Significance; Principles of an Organization; Organization Structure, Span of Control;
Departmentalization; Types of an Organization; Authority-Responsibility; Delegation and
Decentralization; Formal and Informal Organization.

Unit III: Staffing


Concept, Nature and Scope of Staffing, Motivating and Leading: Nature and Importance of Motivation;
Types of Motivation; Theories of Motivation: Maslow, Herzberg, X, Y and Z; Leadership: Meaning and
Importance; Traits of a leader; Leadership Styles, Likerts Systems of Management, Managerial Grid.
Coordination Types and Techniques

Unit IV: Controlling


Nature and Scope of Control; Types of Control; Control Process; Control Techniques Traditional and
Modern; Effective Control System.

Pedagogy: Primarily class lectures followed by question-answer session/ class test/ assignments/ case
study at the end of each unit. Citing live examples and linking these with topics would be used as an
important pedagogy.
