EVALUATION

Aesthetic qualities
Composition:
When creating each graphic, I needed to
make sure the composition of the graphics
was up to standard. This means that I
needed to make the graphics made with
even sizes and with a good intention. When
creating each graphic, the first thing I
needed to do is have an idea of what I
wanted the graphic to look like as then it
makes the creation of the product easier.
Once, I had the idea of the graphics I began
making the graphics the first graphic was
the character. When creating the character,
I had the specific action/movement in my mind and found a humanoid preforming the
movement. Furthermore, I saved the image and placed it on Photoshop which is the
software I will be using to create the graphics. After I saved and placed the image onto
Photoshop I placed an onion skin over the image allowing me to draw around the outline of
the character allowing me to have guidelines for when I begin to colour in the character etc.
moreover, when I had the outline I began to colour and shade the character. The colour
palate I wanted to use for the character was greys, blues and gold. Finally, once I created the
character and added the colours and shades I went around the whole character will a black
brush making the lines stand out more to the viewer.

Colour palettes:
When creating the graphics, I had a specific colour palette in
mind. The colours that I wanted to use was greys, blues and gold
as it matches the games intentions for example the game is a
horror game this means having dark characters adds a level of
detail of the character and in the game. Furthermore, I feel that
adding a good colour palette creates the game as if a game
doesnt have an interesting colour Platte that doesnt match the
genre of the game the game wont entices the audience.

Typography:

Creation of meaning:
I made the character to be able to have a cool factor with the audience however, create
emotion and vibrancy. The character which I created was also created to make the user feel
quite venerable due to the fact of the genre of the game as its an open world survival horror
game this means that the character shouldnt feel invincible but rather weak and needing to
find ammunition etc. This makes the character have a deeper purpose then just to kill the
creatures. The deeper purpose is to survive and become stronger and gain allies throughout
the game. I created other characters to also create a lot of different purposes. The main
example is the creatures purpose is to create a tension of horror and fear towards the user
and the audience.

Industry practice:
Reflect on finished product:
I feel that my finished product has turned out rather well as
the graphics match the look of their original ideas of the
characters etc. for example the main character uses the
same colour schemes and the same style for the character
to be in the game. I also feel that the environment, poster
and games case turned out better than expected as the
original ideas for these products have changed towards the
end as the games poster included my character and the
earth but this became rather difficult and not meeting purpose of the game therefore I
created a new poster design which still included the earth however I added a ship and the
creatures tail instead of having the character as this would of taken too long and wouldnt of
helped me meet deadlines. The same principal happened
with the game cover as I used a PlayStation template
which not only helped me have a realistic looking game
cover but it also changed my cover idea as I couldnt add
the things I wanted to do in the original ideas this means
that what I did was change the back of the game and
tweaked the game cover as I matched the game cover to
the game poster yet changed it to match a game cover
design.

Production skills:
The skills I used throughout the designing process of the graphics are very
varied, however I didnt use a few tools within Photoshop which aided me a lot
throughout the graphic creations. The main tool I used was the paintbrush tool
which can be found on the left hand side of the Photoshop tools menu which
has an icon of a paintbrush. This tool/ skill was most used in my graphics
creation especially when I was creating my character graphic as I hand drew the
graphics making the paintbrush tool very useful. Same principal for the erase
tool as I did make a few mistakes when shading and colouring the character
using the paintbrush tool. However, there were other tolls which made me use
a lot of Photoshop skill such as the cropping tools also known as the quick
selected tool or the magic wand tool. I used these tools to help me create the
poster and the game case as I needed to take images which were from my
assets that werent had drawn this means that I needed to use this crop tool to
help me add the images onto the graphics.

Graphics specifications:
When creating the graphics, I used many different
tools in the software called Photoshop which I
created most if not all of my graphics on.
Furthermore, I created the graphics on Photoshop
as its the software which I have most knowledge
on this means I would find creating the graphics
easier on Photoshop than any other softwares.
Moreover, the software Photoshop helped me
created the correct canvas sizes for each graphics such as the character graphics and the
game cover, this is due to the wide range of sizing for the graphics yet Photoshop had easy to
use tools and menus for me to adapt the canvas size for each graphic. The second main tool I
used for the creation of each graphic was the rectangle/ shapes tool as I add this to a lot of
my graphics to allow me to add shading and break up certain sections of my graphics. The
most common area where I used this rectangle tool was when I created the game cover
graphics as this had areas that needed breaking up.

Workflow and time management:

The things that I could have used for the time management I
felt didnt need to be placed in this production as I knew the
time line already and had an ILP to help me manage the
time for most of the graphic production. Furthermore, I had
milestones to also help me meet the deadline for this
production. Moreover, the ILP and milestones helped me
Nathan Rothery

stay on line for meeting the deadlines for not only the graphics but other things within the
production. However, adding a Visio timeline may have helped with the graphical stage of
the production I didnt use one as the ILP worked just fine.

Technical competence:
Throughout the production there were more effective ways I could have been done
especially when talking about the graphics. For example, I collected my assets as I went
which meant a lot of time was spent on the internet and saving images to the correct file. I
was organized with my graphics, I named them as such but I spent a lot of time collecting
them when I could have been using that time to create better quality graphics. There were a
lot of assets as well to mention. Lots of images and a lot of requirement and legal
information needed for the game packaging.
There were no issues throughout this assignment. No issues with the technology or my
knowledge on how to use certain software. This made it all the easier to complete tasks on
time.

Teamwork:
There wasnt teamwork in this production due to the fact that all the
graphics were created by me and wasnt taken from other sources.
However, there was a little bit of teamwork when I asked one of my
peers for help with Photoshop tools.

Employability skills:
Maths
During the project maths wasnt a large part of the production,
however maths was included. The way maths was involved in the
production of the ident was in the budget section. This involved
little bit of mathematical equations to add up the final budget.
Fortunately, the maths wasnt hard as it was only adding up and
calculators were allowed to help to complete the adding up
quicker. Furthermore, maths was also placed in the sizing of the videos and the stage on the
software Director. This used maths as we needed to think of what numbers fitted the correct
size of the videos to make the visual look of the videos was clear and easily visible.

English
When creating the project, the use of English flourished as it was a very big part of making
sure the product was created and that the client knew it was created to the client
Nathan Rothery

requirements. This is because English was used in basically

everything when we were designing and creating the project.
Furthermore, English was especially used in when I was
evaluation the product and making evaluations for the client.
English was also used a lot in the questionnaire feedback as I had to create an evaluation
including the different areas of the questionnaire such as which question had mixed reviews.
Moreover, I needed to make sure that I was using a sophisticated vocabulary in the writing
sections of the production. I also used English in proof reading as I needed to make sure my
colleagues questions were written correctly.

ICT
When I was creating the product the use of ICT was a main factor as most of the creating
and design of the product was completed on the computer. The skill ICT was a major skill as I
was using softwares to make the ident. The softwares I used were Photoshop and Director
along with Premiere. The softwares needed me to have a wide knowledge of ICT skills as I
needed to know how to use the software when I was editing videos or creating the product.
Furthermore, I need to know the software known as Direct the most as it was the major
equipment for me to create the ident this means that I am using a good amount of ICT skills
and techniques.

Communication
After I created the product communication was key as I needed to do a podcast which allows
me to explain my creation of the product in a good amount of detail and it allows me to
explain how I created the ident to my client through a recording device. This includes
communication as I had to act like I was having a conversation to the recording device.
Furthermore, I used communication skills when I had to explain to my client what my ident
consists of in the client liaison dairy, this made me used a good amount of communication
skills as I had to deliver the explanation to my client clear and confidently as I had to make
sure the client knows what the ident will entail for example the colour scheme of the ident
etc.

Punctuality
When creating the product punctuality is very important as it means that I need to be hitting
deadlines and personal deadlines known as milestones. Furthermore, punctuality is
important as if I dont meet the deadlines the client wont be impressed and may withdraw
with the production of the product and not publish it.
Nathan Rothery

Work-Placement
Going on a work placement dedicated to a pacific area of work I want to do is a very good
thing as it requires me with a good amount of skills and gives me a slight insight to what
working feels like in that type of industry. Once being on a work placement it gives you
better communication skills and also provided the skill such as being more confident when
communicating to a higher individual in a working environment

Legal
The design copyright law and patient act was introduced for two
main purposes, one main purpose is it provides the user with a
reward in the use of this law and the second purpose is that it
also protects the users work from other people claiming or
counterfeiting the users product name or the type of product.
Furthermore, the copyright law also protects the user if their
product was stolen. Before this act was familiarised as a law
there was very little that people could do to legal keep their
product safe. This became a problem due to the reason of if the product was presented to
someone else this product could be easily clamed as their own. This law covers a wide range
of different types of primary multimedia elements. In particular, the copyright law aims at
protecting the ICT work, subsequently (especially if the product was exposed publically for
example the internet) it is a lot easier to steal and claim as your own. This type of offense
applies to the copyright software such as MP3, songs, videos, images and text. Any type of
product that someone has taken and claimed as their own is a breach on the copyright law.
For further information about the copyright law of 1988 click on the link below:
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/48/contents
In the United Kingdom the copyright law is enforced automatically, meaning you dont
usually have to apply or register. This law lasts for a lifetime and moreover an additional 70
years after the creators deceased. After this time has passes the copyright law is passed
down to a new creator heir or beneficiaries. Occasionally, the copyright law does not lie
with solely the creator, yet someone else. This can be at times hard to track but using
primary assets. However, without the copyright holders permission this can lead you into
serious trouble since you are violating the copyright law and could substantially lead you to
court or even prison. The product that has the copyrights holder is the only person who has
the authorisation to allow their product to be produced onto the market by someone else or
some other business by any other party, even if the work is being sorted electronically. If
people are commissioned to do any kind of design work onto the last creators product.
Then they will retain the copyright law until an agreement is signed by both of the parties
stating something else. Although if the virtual creator is employed and isnt working for
themselves then their employer will retain the copyright law.
Nathan Rothery

This copyright law thrives on products which are common, especially images, yet there is the
option to use stock photos, which are photos where the copyright owner has decided to
allow their image available freely to be able to use by the general public. However, you still
have to take into account that it may still have the copyright law on it even though it is
applied to the public. In terms of software, if you buy a software package then what you
have done is purchased a license to use that package legally, this means that you do not own
any rights to this, yet are allowed to use it as stated by the company itself. Each of the
software packages consist of one license in which you can use on a single computer.
However, if you want to transfer this software onto a disk then transporting it onto a
different computer is against law and you will need to purchase another license in order to
create this process legally. Now and then software companies will sell things called multi-
user license in which the package will state specific number of users who can log into the
network.

In my MM project I must take into consideration these copyright laws for when I am the
designing process of my GAP Travel project and that the client is kept fully up to date about
these terms and conditions of the copyright laws.

Ethical considerations:
When working in any part of media products, restrictions always apply in regards to exactly
what you can do or say. This is to defend people from stereotypes such as racist comments
which can not only offend someone, but it can cause them mental and physical problems in
the same way bullying can as racial dispute is a form of bullying. Due to contrary to popular
belief, the internet is a place where you can escape from the real world, yet it provides a
great deal of the stereotypical problems society have to face each day. The internet is a place
where these law are so easily to break as people can become anonymous. This means that
they can perform these upsetting acts in the comfort of known that the people they are
harming do not know who they are. However, luckily these people can be tracked and
therefore, even on the internet, some things are still not allowed. Obviously within different
media job roles, more restrictions are applied and are more heavily published nationally. If
someone takes offense from something they read or heard from a specific company at
individual can proceed to sue that company for a large amount of money. However, their
rules to avoid being sued.
These rules are:
You arent allowed to use images such as pictures videos and sound clip of anyone
unless you have received their permission to do so beforehand either in document
form.
Nathan Rothery

You cannot make a verbal statement about any individual that may course the
individual stress or discomfort and the statement cannot be abusive to the individual.
This is called slander.

You cant make a written statement about any individual that could be seen as
abusive or could harm their reputation. This is called libel.

You are not allowed to use any part of someone elses work without getting the
owners permission beforehand. (Copyright laws).

You have to be conscious in how you represent and describe the content and
characters in your work since you must make sure you are both unbiased and
accurate. This applies to the following:

Race (Black/White/Asian)
Sexuality (homosexual and heterosexual)
Gender (male and female)
Disability (able bodied and otherwise)
Nationality (British or otherwise)
Class (working/middle or upper)
Regionalism (north and south)
Age (old and young)

This means that you cannot suggest in any way that one of the categories is superior to the
others and if you do then you are definitely in breach of this rule and the product will may
not be allowed to be published. There are some laws in place which are co-working
alongside these rules such as The Race Relations Act.

Furthermore, it is essential for when I am proceeding on to the designing planning my

project that I take into consideration all of the legal and ethical acts again to ensure that all
Acts are complied with. Most of the above are just sensible considerations but I will have to
check with the client that she is aware of all the legal and ethical considerations as and when
is necessary.

In order that I dont breach any of these rules I will have to gain permission for each image
that I use from the internet or make sure that they do not have the copyright law
established on them. Meaning that the owner of the image is allowing people to use their
image freely. Therefore, if I do not get permission from the owner I will have to fall back on
to the free images or possibly take and use my own images.

Ofcom is a government programme that controls a lot of the united Kingdoms television and
radio to help stop a large amount of discrimination and is operating to protect the public
from offensive material. Ofcom also cover areas such as Licensing, research, codes and
policies etc.
