Border&Fall - in partnership with Google Arts & Culture launches

a sneak preview of The Sari Series: An Anthology of Drape

To coincide with the launch of #WeWearCulture by Google Arts & Culture, Border&Fall releases
over 60 images of regional sari drapes, as a preview to The Sari Series: An Anthology of Drape.

Thursday, June 8th, 2017 - #WeWearCulture by Google Arts & Culture is a collaboration with over 180
renowned cultural institutions from New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, So Paulo and around the world.
Border&Fall, a digital platform championing Indias garment, textile and craft community, participates with a
preview of images from The Sari Series: An Anthology of Drape - a digital film anthology of India's regional
sari drapes releasing in the fall of 2017.

A seminal undertaking with wide digital reach, the non-profit film series is focused on the saris importance
and relevance as one of Indias most tangible cultural contributions. As a precursor to its fall launch, a new
virtual exhibit in partnership with Google Arts & Culture allows one to explore, for the first time, over 60
regional sari drapes from the series:

The We Wear Culture project brings together 3000 years of the worlds fashion in the largest virtual
exhibition of style. The project allows you to explore everything from the ancient Silk Road, through the
courtly fashions of Versailles, to British punk and the stories behind the clothes you wear today. Fashion
experts, curators and designers as well as universities, museums and NGOs from around the world have
collaborated on the exhibition to show that fashion is a part of our culture, a form of art and a result of true
craftsmanship with a multifaceted impact. Googles state-of-the-art technology, including virtual reality, Street
View and ultra-high resolution gigapixel images were used to preserve the collections and make them
available for everyone.

Highlights from Border&Fall include:

Imagery of over 60 sari drapes, each from 15 states of India. Every drape stays true to its region, whereas
the textiles and blouse pairings have been styled to represent a vision of the sari's changing
presence.

Gigapixel images of five sari textiles taken by Google Arts & Cultures Art Camera a custom built camera
that takes hundreds of close-up images stitched together to create an intensely detailed whole,
revealing details that are hidden from the naked eye.

Curated exhibitions such as Can The Blouse Save The Sari? and Regional Saris and Drapes - India where
online visitors can discover lesser known insights into the garment through interactive stories.
Malika Verma Kashyap, founder of Border&Fall, elaborates on the partnership and projects relevance: "We
are delighted to be part of #WeWearCulture, and to offer a preview of our project months before the films are
released. The platform is built to disseminate art and culture, and our project shares these very same goals.
#WeWearCulture offered us an incredible and unique opportunity to partner with Google, and to share with
the world."

Images launched with Google are part of a larger film series by Border&Fall whose creative team includes
Producer/Creative Director - Malika Verma Kashyap; Sari Advisor - Rta Kapur Chishti; Directors - Bon Duke,
Pooja Kaul and Q; Associate Creative Directors - Rashmi Varma and Deep Kailey; and Advisory Board
members Sunitha Kumar Emmart and Sanjay Garg. We are immensely grateful to our principal patron: Good
Earth. The project consists of:

A complete film library of how-to drape over 80 regional variations of sari drapes.

Three short art films by prominent filmmakers that speak to the saris relevance in the past, present and
future.

"Im really interested in showing the youth, culture and creative work coming out
of India and the forces - fashion, music, writing - behind all this amazing work. At
the same time, I want to respect the subject by not implementing my own
perceptions of what I know about India. The balance is going to be in creating
something that is appealing to India itself - which means avoiding cliches that are
common there - but which feels inclusive to the rest of the world."

" The texture of memory has always interested me, and forms part of all my work,
how it lives with us in the present, and the sari physically embodies that thought
perfectly. We have memories of our mothers and grandmothers wearing their
saris in the morning, of lying under our mothers pallu, and now we have the
challenge of taking it into the future, of re-imagining it, of maybe even loosening
it from the ties of memory. There is a sense of a battle for the sari, which makes
the project important."

I am thrilled to work with Border&Fall to produce a short film about one of the
most complex subjects that I have ever worked on. I am a lover of the sari, and
the fact that Border&Fall is taking this initiative is very exciting, as well as
reassuring. The sari is one of the greatest art forms that exists in the
subcontinent, and precious little work has been done to document and
understand it. I am looking forward to the sari movement.
