RANKING INDEXES AND INDIAS PERFORMANCE

OVER THE YEARS

In the modern age, a countrys wealth, prosperity and success are largely determined by the
countrys policies which creates possibilities for its citizens and resources to be used in different
manners which help in shaping the country in many ways.

In todays world Globalization has enabled a country to have its presence beyond any physical
borders and has thus lead to the interdependence is countries which is very evidently seen as well.

There are various ranking indexes which rank a country on single parameters viz. Literacy Rate,
Economic Size, Corruption Perceptions and there are several composite indexes which take in
several parameters and then produce a comprehensive report and rank countries accordingly.

It must be emphasised that even though the information provided by the various ranking indexes
cannot accurately estimate a countrys prosperity or success in absolute terms, they can put forward
the same data in a relative sense by comparing the same parameters with other countries.

Most of these parameters generally group countries into various zones on the basis of several
parameters like geographical location, overall development scenario (under developed, developing
and developed), economic size etc.
GOOD COUNTRY INDEX:

The Good Country Index is a measure of the contribution of 163 countries towards planet Earth and
the human race through their policies and their behaviour.

GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS INDEX:

Competitiveness is defines as the set of Institutions, policies and factors that determine the level of
productivity of an economy, which in turn sets the level of prosperity that the country can earn.

The GCI combines 114 indicators that capture concepts that matter for productivity. These indicators
are grouped into 12 pillars. These are in turn organized into three sub-indexes, in line with the three
main stages of development: basic requirements, efficiency enhancers and innovation and
sophistication factors.

The GCI includes statistical data from internationally recognised agencies, notably the International
Monetary Fund, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and the
World Health Organization.

THE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX:

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistic of life expectancy, education and per
capita income indicators, which are used to rank countries into four tiers of Human Development.

The individual statistics are:

Life Expectancy Index:

This is a statistical measure of the average time an organism is expected to live, based on their yar of
birth, their current age and other demographic factors.

The Life Expectancy Index (LEI) is mathematically expressed as:

20
=
85 20
Where, LE = the average life expectancy

The LEI is 1 when Life Expectancy at birth is 85 and it is 0 when Life Expectancy at birth is 0.

Education Index:
Education is a major component of well-being and is used in the measure of economic development
and quality of life, which is a key factor determining whether a country is a developed, developing or
underdeveloped.

The Education Index is calculated as:

+
=
2
Where,

= 15 , MYS (Mean years of schooling) is the average number of competed years of

education of a population.

= 18 , EYS (Expected years of schooling) Number of years a child of school entrance

age can expect to spend in a given level of education.

Income Index:
The Income Index is calculated as:
ln() ln(100)
=
ln(75,000) ln(100)
Where GNIpc is the Gross National Income (per capita).
Finally, the HDI calculated as:
3
= . .

The statistics for the individual sub-indexes are given below:

THE UN E-GOVERNANCE INDEX:

The E-Government Development Index (EGDI) is a weighted average of normalised scores on the
three most i important dimensions of e-government, namely: scope and quality of online services
(Online Service Index, OSI), status of the development of telecommunication infrastructure
(Telecommunication Infrastructure Index, TII) and inherent human capital (Human Capital Index,
HCI). Each of these sets of indices is in itself a composite measure that can be extracted and
analysed independently.
1
= ( + + )
3

The composite value of each component index is then normalised to fall between the range of 0 to 1
and the overall EGDI is derived by taking the arithmetic average of the three component indexes.
