0 INTRODUCTION

Headset is an audio device which consists of a set of headphone (or earphone) and a

microphone. There are many type of headset available in the market. It can be manufactured

with single-earpiece or a double-earpiece. The single earpiece is mono audio type while the

double-earpiece can be mono to both ears or commonly known as stereo audio type. This

particular device (headset) provide the same function as a telephone handset but operate with

a hands-free operation. It is widely used in telephone-intensive jobs and for anybody that

wish to have both hands free while having a telephone conversation.

Headset is basically a combination of a headphone and a microphone. Technically an

earphone falls under the category of transducer. An earphone convert electrical energy to

sound energy. When the electrical current flow in the coil of the earphone the coil will be a

temporary electromagnet. The presence of the magnet will cause the attraction and repulsion

between the coil and the magnet. Hence, this action will leads to the air being pumped the

vibrated air will produce sound

Microphone operate in a reverse operation of the earphone. It basically convert sound

energy to electrical energy. This electrical energy is caused by the vibration of electronic

components in the microphone due to vibration of the diaphragm. This electrical energy the

will be sent to any device that is connected to the microphone.

The user interface such as device like the computer, phone or any device that can act

as a transmitter or also can act as receiver. For example if phone acts as a transmitter, the

phone will transmit the source information as analog electric signal. This signal was

converted from digital electric signal through the use of the Analog to Digital Converter

(ADC) inside of the phone. This converted analog electric signal then will be transmitted via

the cable, usually a copper wire which act as a transmission channel or transmission

medium. The signal that is being transmitted to the output transducer which in this case is the

speaker in the earphone. The electric current that flows through the coil will cause the coil to

be a temporary electromagnet which is attracted and also repelled by the permanent magnet.

This will be followed by the vibration of the cone which will pump the sound waves to the

air. This will produce an audio signal that can be understand by the user.

In another case, the microphone of the headset will acts as the transmitter. The source is the

speech of the user. The speech will cause the diaphragm of the microphone to vibrate and this

will also cause the other components in the microphone to vibrate. This vibrations are

converted to an electric current which will become analog audio/electrical signal. This signal

then will move through the transmission channel which in this case the cable or copper

wire. The signal then will be transmitted to the phone, which will act as a receiver since the

analog audio/electrical signal will be converted to the digital electrical signal through the use

of a built in Analog to Digital Converter (ADC).

5.0 CONCLUSION

The basic block diagram of the headset have been identified. The headset have been

disassembled so that the basic component can be related to the basic operation of the headset.

The communication system has been related with the daily life application. The device

surrounding us need to be appreciated since it is not easy to produce such device.
