softwaredeveloperTonRoosendaal.ThenameBlenderwas
inspiredbyasongbyYello,fromthealbumBaby.[6]WhenNeo
Geowasacquiredbyanothercompany,TonRoosendaalandFrank
vanBeekfoundedNotaNumberTechnologies(NaN)inJune1998
tofurtherdevelopBlender,initiallydistributingitasshareware
untilNaNwentbankruptin2002.
Thedesktopsceneinversion2.77
OnJuly18,2002,Roosendaalstartedthe"FreeBlender"
campaign,acrowdfundingprecursor.[7][8]ThecampaignaimedforopensourcingBlenderforaonetime
paymentof100,000(US$100,670atthetime)collectedfromthecommunity.[9]OnSeptember7,2002,itwas
announcedthattheyhadcollectedenoughfundsandwouldreleasetheBlendersourcecode.Today,Blenderis
free,opensourcesoftwarethatisapartfromtheBlenderInstitute'stwofulltimeandtwoparttime
employeesdevelopedbythecommunity.[10]

TheBlenderFoundationinitiallyreservedtherighttouseduallicensing,sothat,inadditiontoGPLv2,Blender
wouldhavebeenavailablealsoundertheBlenderLicensethatdidnotrequiredisclosingsourcecodebut
requiredpaymentstotheBlenderFoundation.However,theyneverexercisedthisoptionandsuspendedit
indefinitelyin2005.[11]Blenderissolelyavailableunder"GNUGPLv2oranylater"andwasnotupdatedto

Nevertheless,theyputoutonemorerelease,2.25.Asasortofeasteregg,alastpersonaltag,theartistsand
developersdecidedtoadda3Dmodelofachimpanzeehead.ItwascreatedbyWillemPaulvanOverbruggen
(SLiD3),whonameditSuzanneaftertheorangutanintheKevinSmithfilmJayandSilentBobStrikeBack.

SuzanneisBlender'salternativetomorecommontestmodelssuchastheUtahTeapotandtheStanfordBunny.
Alowpolygonmodelwithonly500faces,Suzanneisoftenusedasaquickandeasywaytotestmaterial,

Therearetwotypesofintegrators:

1.Thedefaultpathtracingintegratorisapurepathtracer.Ateachhititbounceslightinonedirectionand
picksonelighttoreceivelightingfrom.Thismakeseachindividualsamplefastertocompute,but
typicallyrequiresmoresamplestocleanupthenoise.
2.Thealternativeisabranchedpathtracingintegratorwhichatthefirsthitsplitsthepathfordifferent
surfacecomponentsandtakesalllightsintoaccountforshadinginsteadofjustone.Thismakeseach
sampleslower,butreducesnoise,especiallyinscenesdominatedbydirectoronebouncelighting.

OpenShadingLanguage

BlenderuserscancreatetheirownnodesusingtheOpenShadingLanguagealthoughitisimportanttonotethat
thereisnosupportforitonGPUs.[37]

definingthemesh'sappearanceofthesurface,volumeinside,anddisplacementofthesurface.[33]

Surfaceshader

Thesurfaceshaderdefinesthelightinteractionatthesurfaceofthemesh.OneormoreBSDFscanspecifyif
incominglightisreflectedback,refractedintothemesh,orabsorbed.[33]

Volumeshader

Whenthesurfaceshaderdoesnotreflectorabsorblight,itentersthevolume.Ifnovolumeshaderisspecified,
itwillpassstraightthroughtotheothersideofthemesh.

Ifoneisdefined,avolumeshaderdescribesthelightinteractionasitpassesthroughthevolumeofthemesh.
Lightmaybescattered,absorbed,oremittedatanypointinthevolume.[33]

Displacementshader

Theshapeofthesurfacemaybealteredbydisplacementshaders.Thisway,texturescanbeusedtomakethe
meshsurfacemoredetailed.

Dependingonthesettings,thedisplacementmaybevirtual,onlymodifyingthesurfacenormalstogivethe
impressionofdisplacement(alsoknownasbumpmapping)oracombinationofrealandvirtual
